jsrockit Posted January 14, 2010 Share #1 Posted January 14, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I always hear there are so many street photographers in NYC, but when I'm out in the streets, I never see anyone except the occasional tourist with a Leica in the financial district. I don't photograph people really, more just stuff I find interesting when walking around, but I tend to spend most of my time in the Upper East Side, Chinatown, and the East Village. In the last 6 month, I haven't seen any other photographers much less Leica users. Do you NYers see other photographers when you are out on the street and if so, where? Advertisement Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 Hi jsrockit, Take a look here Street Photography NYC?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
JE Posted January 14, 2010 Share #2 Posted January 14, 2010 Hmmm. I was there in the last 6 months. I was staying in alphabet city, walked around chinatown almost every day and saw at least 3 people other than myself and Ben with a Leica. I also saw numerous people, students probably, shooting film. Strange. Jon
jsrockit Posted January 14, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted January 14, 2010 Wow, I must either be blind or going on the wrong days (too damn cold?)...
h00ligan Posted January 14, 2010 Share #4 Posted January 14, 2010 In my six years there I also saw a ton in chinatown, soho, LES, alphabet city, etc. I didn't spend much time in the FD though, but I would think that may be a less interesting place to shoot given the apparel of most wandering the area. I lived at 70th and 2nd and never saw street shooters there...but some students carrying and not shooting. Subway shooters were also very very common. If you want an interesting shot - find out when the next cuddleparty is and camp outside, it was a building over from mine i think it's 320 e 70th. (well it was there when i left - about 2 yrs) shots of pj's on the streets could be interesting. http://www.cuddleparty.com/ I foresee myself moving back in the next 6 months after I sell my car, I miss it too much to stay in this hot boring city. edit - looks like cuddleparty no longer post the active address unless you register and they are also suggesting you change on location - BUMMER! Wish I had cared about photog then - people in pj's walking with stuffed bears through the winter city snow.. talk about a missed opportunity. jsrockit Posted January 14, 2010 Author Share #5 Posted January 14, 2010 I'm not really interested in making photos of people on the street...I can do that all day anywhere in NYC. I'm interested in meeting photographers in the area that wander the streets making photos. Maybe its just been too cold for most the last few months. You really have to look very carefully who is around you at all times. I for one, I am always in the streets of NYC, lower Manhattan area on the prowl, but I keep my Leica well hidden. And I have encountered ordinary people making comments on my new Leica X1 which was surprising to me. One cop from Sheepshead Bay actually told me that one of his uncle had an old Leica. Maybe one of these Saturday afternoons, I will bump into you, You can't miss me...an Asian guy collared around the neck with X1 and a green color string tethered cap....LOL... jsrockit Posted March 15, 2010 Author Share #9 Posted March 15, 2010 Haha, yeah Edward, we will be the only guys in the area with the X1. I guess I'm just looking to meet people who photograph in NYC (who aren't tourists) since I don't know anyone in town. I don't mind photographing alone, but wouldn't mind hanging out with others who are into photography as well.
eduardoho Posted March 17, 2010 Share #10 Posted March 17, 2010 Hei John: why don't you start a group in NYC... I will be the first to join.
jsrockit Posted March 17, 2010 Author Share #11 Posted March 17, 2010 I think it is hard to start a group. You are the only person who's shown any interest.
eduardoho Posted March 17, 2010 Share #12 Posted March 17, 2010 I think it is hard to start a group. You are the only person who's shown any interest. Why not be the first ones and start one up ourselves? Name: NYC Kaleidoscope... we can do casual stuff first, meet and have meals at any of the fabulous ethnic restaurants, go to street fairs (if they still got it in 2010), or special events...then we can hook up with Leica Camera USA in Allendale and latch with any of their events. What do you think?...ANYONE ELSE OUT THERE INTERESTED IN THIS?
jsrockit Posted March 17, 2010 Author Share #13 Posted March 17, 2010 I'd be interested for sure. If we can get a few people, it sounds like a plan.
ezc203 Posted March 18, 2010 Share #14 Posted March 18, 2010 I shoot around New York quite often when I'm in town. Usually drifting around below 14th St. Catch me if you can? Also, I know Stuart (stuny) and Ben (roguewave) are also very often spotted roaming around with their Leicas, unfortunately I have yet to run into them. PayPerView Posted April 5, 2010 Share #15 Posted April 5, 2010 I'll be shooting in NYC soon and often...group sounds fun but can't imagine us out together...haha.. I'm pretty stealthy ( I imagine at least)... I have have many people notice my camera's whether Canon 1 series, L lenses and have not yet shot street photography with either Leica but it's a great idea... Maybe this week! jsrockit Posted April 5, 2010 Author Share #16 Posted April 5, 2010 I'm down with meeting up with anyone in NYC. On the RFF a few NYC-ers get together not to shoot together, but to have a few beers and talk about photo and cameras.
ezc203 Posted April 5, 2010 Share #17 Posted April 5, 2010 Sounds like an interesting proposition. If such a get together ever happens, let me know, I am definitely interested to meet other photogs in the area.
