Gianpaolo Tescari Posted January 12, 2010 Share #1 Posted January 12, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) A very simple question for experienced digital photographers: I have always taken B&W analogue stills, although, having bought a Leica D-Lux 3 last year, I started using colour photography and Photoshop to process it with, I must confess, a lot of fun. Still, I continue to be in love with B&W. Here comes the question: to obtain better stills in B&W, is it better to shoot in color and shift to B&W with Photoshop, or you get better results starting directly in B&W? Maybe it does not make any sense taking B&W stills with a digital camera, or does it? Thanks for your answers. gpt
Advertisement Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 Hi Gianpaolo Tescari, Take a look here B&W: Color or B&W. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
pop Posted January 12, 2010 Share #2 Posted January 12, 2010 Presuming that your camera can take images in raw format, then raw is better than color jpeg, color jpeg is better than b&w jpeg. Reasons: The camera discards information present in the raw image when it produces the color jpeg. It discards still more information when converting to b&w. Therefore, you have much more data to work with if you store the image in the raw format and convert later on your PC. Should one step fail, you still have the original unreduced data at your disposal.
jaapv Posted January 12, 2010 Share #3 Posted January 12, 2010 Actually the B&W jpgs of Leica are very nice, but if you want control over the result it is best to shoot RAW and convert using any of the multitude of methods available.
