Delkin Charger

Got one of these eventually - I originally got it for when I'm travelling with the M9s + Canon 5Ds - it will reduce overall bulk and weight. It's good in parts... It certainl does what it says on the box in terms of charging a range of different batteries + offering a good level of intelligent information. The annoyance, however, is the power brick that comes with it - this pretty well eliminates the benefit of the dual charger function as the M9 + 5D2 charger + a single figure 8 cable are pretty compact.

Still - not a waste of money + it will be a useful backup when moving between the London place + Cheshire. I should never be without something to charge the different systems. :)

Some snaps attached for the information of those considering buying.

BTW - shot with the 50 lux fully open on the M9 - hence the dreamy bokeh! Also, the red "splash" in the second picture is from the blindingly bright LED telling me that the Canon battery was below 25% charge.

Chris:

Which Delkin model is this and is it configured for Europe? I'm in the States, but want international compatibility.

Thanks,

Rich

To my knowledge the charger is the same for every battery and you change the plate on the charger to accept different make/model batteries.

Most all, if not all, charger transformers work with all voltage/cycle electricity around the world. All you need is either a new main power cable with the proper plug on it for wherever/whatever part of the world you are in or an adapter plug from your native land to the land you are in.

Thank you Chris for posting this. I just had a vacation where I carried three different chargers so this is appealing --- except for that brick. The three chargers I carried were all small (M9; DLux3; and Canon S50 (no laughter please - use it with an undwerwater case). Maybe we can figure out an alternative power source. What is the voltage output of the brick? and what kind of connector between the brick and the charger unit? Also, can you let us know what the system costs? Thanks

Hi - Model DD/DUC-UK - but the UK bit's only because of the silly plugs we have here... Some further shots below. Total cost in the UK was £45 direct from Delkin. This included:

the charger + 3 pairs of charger plates (M8+M9 / 5D mk2 / 5D) + carriage. Reasonably priced. If anyone's got a wheeze for dispensing with the brick (or letting me use a laptop adaptor which will work with my (19.5 volt) Sony Vaio I'd be delighted!

Well I've not tried this approach yet but I've been considering it.

The Delkin Charger comes with a car charge cable. This car charger is significantly smaller than the normal brick like mains charger. Now you are probably wondering why that is a good thing.......... until you look at this:

Car Charger to Mains Socket Adapter -USB data cables memory cards mobile phone ipod accessories genuine cover case fascia speakers bluetoth battery dvd media external hard drive

One solution that allows you to charge from either a car or a normal wall socket simply by removing an adapter from the end and yet still smaller than the supplied mains charger? Worth thinking about.

That's a really neat idea. As well as this UK one, there's a Europlug equivalent on a well known auction site: (search for "Wall power charger" or some such) and the US version that someone has already mentioned.

Just one problem: these things are designed for charging phones and MP3 players rather than big camera batteries. Max output is listed as 12V 500mA, i.e. 6 watts compared with the 35W shown on the Delkin power brick. If you want to try charging an M9 battery with one of these things, don't leave it unattended.

Damn - for £4.35 I thought I had an answer!

It seems like a good idea but poorly executed. One thing about multi-purpose chargers is that you still need backup in case one breaks or gets fried by unpredictable electrical suppliies while traveling.

I'm traveling with two of the new smaller Leica chargers. I'm also thinking of replacing the long mains cables with shorter ones (1-2 feet). They're relatively compact and having two means I'll still be ok if one gets fried.

For traveling with two systems the Delkin makes sense, though I'd argue that taking two of 'em is a good idea. This is one of the reasons I don't like traveling with two systems--having multiple sets of batteries/chargers/cards etc. is a pain.

Chris--just buy another M9 and they you'll solve your charger problem since you can leave the Canon at home. Talk about reducing bulk:D

Dear Noah - been there, done that! It's more the issue of what to do when travelling with two systems - which happens enough times to make the Delking feel useful. I'd rather go M only - but sometimes I need that 300mm reach! :o

Bugger! Why didn't I spot this post... Heighho - bulky as it is, it's smaller than the M8 charger and will give me a backup...

Good to know about the Hahnel though...

C'mon people! Remember when you used to have to travel with hundreds of rolls of film? A couple of chargers no big deal.....

No. But one advantage of the Delkin charger is you can charge AA, as well as a Camera battery (or 2 Camera Batteries), at the same time. It's a lot smaller that the original M8 charger, but larger than the current charger.

Very true. Last time I traveled with film I swore I would never do it again. And I haven't, so far:D.

Chris--Just kidding. Sort of. Luckily for me I rarely use long lenses so the M's can do it all--most of the time.
