Digilux 2 - minor issue with AF and AF macro

One of my DL2's always shows the macro icon (i.e. the flower) in the viewfinder/LCS regardless of whether I am in regular or macro auto focus.

Based on my understanding of the manual, the only difference between regular auto-focus and macro auto-focus is that in regular AF the camera only tries to focus from 60cm on, and in macro AF the camera tries to focus starting at 30cm.

Question 1: Even if my DL2 is "stuck" in macro AF, the only penalty I pay is that it might take longer to focus when I am not doing close up. Am I interpreting this correcly?

This camera was just serviced (12/21) by Leica according to the guy I bought it from. I have an original receipt showing replacement of sensor - under warranty - and the following:

ADJUST AUTOFOCUS

REPAIR FOCUSING MOUNT

CLEAR, LUBRICATE, ADJUST ALL FUNCTIONS

For which they charged $237.

Question 2: what's the focusing mount?

Thanks a bunch as always,

Alberto

i assume the s/n on the receipt is the same as the camera that you have, and not a copy of another one.

if it's correct, i would e-mail the leica shop and ask them what you should do.

a similar remark was written on my D2 repair bill (2006), as the focus ring was sticky to turn..... now my ring is inaccurate by about 100meters :p, but i live with it.

Hi Daveleo,

Yes, the receipt and the camera S/N match. It was a local (craigslist transaction) and I checked everything - or so I thought.

Frankly, since the camera operates fine and the only "symptom" - as far as I can tell - is the Macro icon (which only appears in one of the display options) showing up when it should not, I am reticent to go through the hassle and risks of shipping. But I may contact them via email as you suggested.

I am still interested in getting an expert answer to my question about the Macro vs. non-Macro AF:

Is the only difference between macro and non-macro auto-focus that macro might take longer to focus because the system will have to travel a longer range before finding the proper focus? In other words, I can aim for an arbitrarily distant focus even when in macro AF mode and the only "penalty" is going to be a few 10th of a second before focus is achieved?

I've tried to do experiments and it's hard to tell a difference between the two modes. As a matter of fact, during regular shooting with my other DL2s (which don't exhibit this symptom) I often move the focus dial from regular AF to macro AF accidentally.

Thanks,

Alberto

As far as I'm aware that is the only difference between normal and macro modes on all auto focus cameras. The focus in macro mode coveres the whole range (macro = large or largest range) whereas in normal focus mode it goes from (say) just 30cm to infinity, i.e. not the whole range to make focusing faster. I've accidently knocked my DL2 into macro mode a few times and never noticed when taking pictures.

Alberto,

You're quite correct, the only difference is that macro starts from closer and takes longer to find focus.

(A very small point of 'housekeeping': you may confuse people on this forum by referring to your Digilux 2 in shorthand as a 'DL2' because most people understand that to be a D-Lux 2. The normal shorthand for a Digilux 2 is 'D2'. :))

Pete.

Thanks. If that's the case, I will definitely "live with it" since it will cause me less concern than having to send the camera back to Leica. I am glad I'm not the only one who accidentally knocks it into macro mode.

Thanks,

Alberto

Thanks Pete. And also thank you for the "housekeeping" point - D2 it is from now on.

  • 1 year later...

Hi Alberto,

I have recently purchased a D2 with the macro flower symbol stuck on.

I was wondering did you ever get it fixed by Leica ?

Does it make any differance Auto Normal - Macro?

Because the flower light is on does that mean it is stuck in macro mode even if the ring is set to normal?

I would appreciate your advice.

Thank You

Regards

Terry.
