Simple scenario for X1 , how good is X1 at this?

Can the X1 be used reliable as I describe now:

Many years ago I used a compact camera with film. 35mm lens and film format.

I used the viewfinder for framing and pushed the release button. All other settings were perfect and done by the camera automatically. Even the subjects were in focus automatically, as far as I can remember always in every single shot.

I know that the X1 has a lot more adjustment possibilities but if I buy it it would be because I would like to use it like I used the film compact.

I would like to use the viewfinder for framing and push the release button to get the picture. That's it. Everything else should be done by the camera automatically.

I expect correct focus, depth-of field and exposure. That's how I have the most fun with this camera, just concentrating on framing the picture. Looking at X1's viewfinder concept the camera must have been build for that.

No, I don't want to use a different compact camera because of the lack of viewfinder and the much too small sensors (picture quality not sufficient).

I used the mentioned film compact mostly for travel photography and typical subjects like landscapes, architecture here and there, markets, quick snapshots of interesting scenes.

That's where I would use the X1 as well.

The old camera must have used very simple algorithms for setting DOF/aperture and focus.

This should be no problem for a modern camera.

I couldn't find a review that addresses this simple picture making scenario specificially.

Any ideas how good the X1 is with this?

this x1 isn't designed with a viewfinder. the viewfinder is an extra you have to pay for.

and in answer to your question, even though i have never used an x1 before, i am sure that it will do everything you listed. but, should you decide to explore more than just composure, you can even think about shutter speeds and aperture with the x1.

Maybe not every time, but if I compare to nowadays focus problem discussions and wrong dof decisions made by users in web pics this camera must have been almost perfect with it's simple automatic. :D It was an Olympus my1

Thanks for your assessment of the X1!

I agree, I still shooting pictures with the first Leica Mini today. I have more enlargements (16"x20") from this P&S. Love the simplicity of operations, good dof, great color and focus on my subject.

I would like to see a real digital P&S just like the Leica Mini, update with the LCD monitor and keep the view finder.

Not sure what you mean by this

Depth of field depends on the aperture used (and the lens/sensor of course). If you shoot on program mode then you have no control over DoF. With the X1 you will have the choice of aperture priority which allows you to choose the aperture and the camera will decide on the shutter speed.

Yes, that was my question. How good is the X1 in program mode?

I would really like to use it that way.

How can anyone answer your question? Apart from a handful which have leaked onto the market it is not available yet!

Have you seen a Digilux 2? It seems to do more than you require; goodness knows why that camera was not followed up.

I know that there were a few reviewers and I know as well that this scenario is usually not tested because it seams to be too much amateurish. But if I remeber correctly I left a note in one thread of a tester to please test it. Wasn't done. ;)

No problem, I can wait a few months.

If that's really what you want get a GF1 and EVF and shoot in iA mode - something heavily reviewed favourably.. just a thought. It doesn't occur to me that the x1 is meant to be used in auto, although capable - perhaps not the BEST choice. Seems to me to be the evolution of the bridge camera...which is already beyond your desire, sans sensor size. Just a thought.

Set aperture to 5.6 (2.8 in low light).

Turn Auto-iso on to Max ISO of 1600 and minimum speed 1/125th (one time only)

I think it should cover about any situation you might face and require very manual settings intervention.

It should handle it quite well, and even better than most other P&Ss out there, because of the higher ISO/sensor/dynamic range capabilities of the camera.

The somewhat slow (for Leica standards) lens will give you wide DoF and if you stick on using apertures around 5.6/8 then DoF should be infinite. You can even be able to take some nice portraits @ 2.8 for some blurred backgrounds which is cool. Other than this, DoF will hardly be of a burden on such a camera...
