My M9 will go back to Solms on Friday, due to serious front focus issues:(

Anyone else having problem with focus problems?

My M8 had back focus issues and went to Solms two times.

I'm lucky to have a M8.2 that's spot on:)

Yep. My M9 started today it's trip back home with backfocus issues.

If there is one feature I truly miss on the M9 that I have on the Canon 1DsMkIII it is the front/back focus adjustment. Being able to adjust a difficult focussing lens like the 85 f1.2 in the camera is a real bonus.

I hope once the M9 returns it will be spot on.

Is it front focusing on all your lenses?

Yes it is

And confirmed by the my dealer

Thanks for posting. Do you have any quantitive measurement by how much your M9 front focuses for which lens at close focus distance? A number of my lenses seem to front focus in such a way that the entire DOF area is in front of the focus point. Is your front focus worse? What should it look like?

Thanks for a reply.

Front focus is approximately 1,8 - 2 cm at 1 meter distance

The M8 shot is after my M8 had been two times to Solms

Many thanks. This is tremendously useful information for me. I assume the M8 paper was at roughly a 45º angle. Do you know where I could get a copy of that paper pattern? It looks very useful. Thanks.

Also, could you please have a look at my measurements here:

I think I have a problem with my M9 camera and not my lenses.

What do you think? Thanks again for your help.

Strangely, my Nikon D700 does not appear to have either of these faults.

Should I expect this to be a normal problem? It seemed to be on the M8 and the get-well version too.

An SLR is bound to have far less problems with this than a rangefinder. Any front- or backfocussing is compensated by the view of the focussing screen.

It's not so good to say from the "screen shot" you have posted, but it seems that you have front focus issue. Whether it is the M9 or the lens needs to be checked – please post focus test made with a "focus chart" and another lens as well as with 50Lux.

  • 2 weeks later...

My M9 is consistently front focusing 3cm on all 6 lenses I have. It is headed back to Leica NJ today. Any chance or idea how one can recoup the insured shipping- I find it difficult to swallow on a 2 week old camera.

Thanks,

What would I have to expect is a turnaround time for focus adjustment?

I dropped the camera directly at the Belgian distributor on Jan 6th (to cut the shipment time from my dealer to the distributor) but with the paperwork from my dealer done. It showed up one week later as "Service order registered" and went "In repair" on Jan 14th.

Anyone living in Europe has experience with this?

Mine was engraved and adjusted in a four-day turnaround, not counting the intake, as the engraving had to be sorted. However, going through the dealer network can be considerably slower, as the shop will collect a batch to send to the importer, the importer will collect a batch to send to Leica, etc. If you want to know exactly, just give Customer Service a call.

I live in Belgium as well.

First time I sent my M8 in I did through a dealer in Germany (from whom I had bought a lense) and asked customer service to send the camera directly to me (i.e, not through the dealer), which they did.

Second time I sent via my Belgian dealer but against asked for and got shipment to me directly.

In both instances I avoided the shipping costs and saved at least a bit of time. If it is urgent, I would call customer service.

Thanks Jaapv and GMB. It is not that urgent of course, but a day without an M9 is... well you know.

Did one of you (or even others) considered or used alternative repair/service centers than Leica in Solms? I read a lot of good comments on a guy named Will van Manen at "Kamera Service" in the Netherlands. Although my camera is still under warranty it's prices for a calibration seemed reasonable and turnaround time fairly quick. Any comments ?
