Great X1 review. Despite the links to some photo shops, I'd imagine your efforts are a labor of love. Keep writing reviews like you do and I'd suspect that may deservingly change for the better.

I placed an order for an X1, not based on the previous 'master' reviews but mostly influenced by your X1 photo's. The difference is you write with enthusiasm and emotion when you uncover a winning product. Others have an image to maintain and a cookie cutter formula to follow.

Keep it up, screw the lab work, maybe tee up some forums at your site . Until then, you know where to find us.

While it's not a lean, mean, street machine it is a compact that is capable of IQ results equaling an M8 and 24 Elmarit combo.

That's why I find it intriguing... it sounds like a deal when you think in those terms.

I am not sure it's a "good" deal but the image quality and Leica stamp of approval helps.

I never found myself caught up in assessing the X1 value compared to the 4/3 lens swapping models. Raise your hand if you think owning a $1000. camera that welcomes additional lenses will stay under $2000. for long. Nothing wrong with that but a real possiblity to think about, especially for those on the fence about the X1 price tag. Accessories aside, two thousand complete and the best of breed for image quality. That's how I justified it.

It's not complete. You still have to add the OVF and the grip and maybe the 1/2 case. More like $2500 to $2700 then complete! :D

LOL Yea, I'm one of those guys that will do my best to make the X1 purchase complete.:p

thinking like that one needs to get all the accessories to have it complete.

Cheers!

Only when you buy the Hermes, Prada or Luis Vitton Edditions, then your purse and shoes must match! :D:D Otherwise, the style police will get you. :(

Am I the only one that feels no need for any of these? The only thing I'll buy is a new strap and be done. :)

I agree. All i need is the camera and probably the little case to keep it safe. My camera/digital imaging course starts tomorrow and no camera! Oh well and no one i know owns a camera i can even borrow. I should have waited till they were released but i thought i'd have plenty of time when i booked this way back in Oct last year. Now it looks like Feb is a more realistic time.

Sure going to be tricky with nothing to practice/work on.

To be honest, I can't imagine your class would want you using an X1 to start off with... they are mostly likely going to persuade you to buy a DSLR for learning... and are going to be shocked that you are going to class without a camera.

I'm sure the tutor will have something to say..... Don't worry me, what's wrong with taking an X1 along. It will be my first camera so maybe i should have taken the advice of the local store keeper and bought the GF1. Having looked around i just liked the Leica brand and after looking at the photos on this forum i picked the X1.

Now you have worried me....... the class starts monday, not saturday.

Any advice will be taken on board. I read that the X1 is a simple camera to use and can if used correctly offer superb prints.

JS its not a full time professional course. 2 x 2 hours per week for 10 weeks at the local college.

I understand, but they will probably tell you what they expect you to have camera wise during your first class. I went to school for photography in the 90s and used a minilux at times for prints that were 16x20... and the professors didn't care. However, when I started, you need a manual SLR (or rangefinder) for Photo I. I'm sure things have changed a lot since then, but I'm sure they will still try to dictate your equipment. That said, the X1, as we both know, is perfectly capable and fine for a class... but the professor may not think so.

I don't think the beginning course will mandate a DSLR - I think they will deal a lot with composition and the trinity - at least that's how the 101 class here was described. So long as you can change iso, shutter, aperture - and it's not a point and shoot, I can't see them complaining.. even then I bet some take it with a point and shoot.

Thanks for the review Steve . Very much confirming the other previews from people that really know something about photgraphy. (a.o Sean Reid)

One issue that I am missing in your review however is the way to make the X1 a real street Photography tool. In extend discussed with Sean in the LEICA FORUM and by Sean on his own website. ZONE FOCUSSING !

You mentioned it only very quickly but this issue is so important for many of us.

Ofcourse the wheel on the back with the limited scale on the screen are not what we will work with. Like you said this will take even more time to start up than any AF. The way to work with the X1 as a streeshooting gun is to (for example) set aperture to F11. AF to a point a approx. 2.5 metres. Switch with the dedicated button (below the dial on the back) to MF (press 2 times) and fire away in the highest speed possible from any distance from 1.4 metres to infinity. Just framing and shooting (shutter lag is improved since Sean got newest update) without the annoying lag of AF. Experiment with aperures and distances . Practice distance estimation and you will become a stealthy streetshooter with the X1. For more static pictures very fast AF is ofcourse fine but not essential. Those who want this kind of pocketable camera with big sensor AND fast AF will have to wait another few years due to technical hardware shortcomings at this moment of time.

Why wait if you can work you way around it ?

Have fun and shoot like hell !!

I think for shooting with large DOF small sensor cameras have a real advantage. You do not need to stop them down to get large DOF.

Stopping down the x1 means you will have to increase ISO quite often and you destroy the ISO advantage of the larger sensor.

Right, but if you want shallow depth of field with a small sensor you are f*cked. :D I'd rather have both options than just one option. As sensors get better, this won't matter as much.

Since he has to deal with the sensor he gets, the fact that they may improve in the future is of little consequence. That is like saying the AF will improve in the future. It doesn't help with the X1. Also f11 is probably close to or in the diffraction area for the lens and will require a very high ISO to keep the shutter speed out of the blur area and very bright light. Thus, a very limited scenario for use is presented.

I have a question for Steve and that is how does one set the flash sync speed on the X1? It doesn't say in the specs what the flash sync speed is or how to change it. Is it fixed no matter what the aperture?
