jbgeach Posted January 5, 2010 Share #1 Posted January 5, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have done a search and not found any threads on the CV 35 1.4. It looks like a pretty fun lens. Anyone out there have one? I just don't have $4000 laying around to drop on the Leica 35 1.

jsrockit Posted January 5, 2010 Share #5 Posted January 5, 2010 I use one and feel it is very good... I have the single coated one. Mine doesn't seem to have the backfocus issues either, but I have not done those geeky tests that people like to do.
farnz Posted January 5, 2010 Share #6 Posted January 5, 2010 I have done a search and not found any threads on the CV 35 1.4. ... There are a quite a few and here's one I found by searching on 35/1.4 Nokton: Leica M8 and Voigtlander 35mm f1.4 Nokton S.C.? There are a number of reports from owners, including me, who found the lens to have focus shift and back focus at certain apertures although not all owners experienced this problem. I sold mine because it just couldn't compete optically with my 35/1.2 Nokton; even though the 1.2's larger and heavier it always made it out the door before the 1.4. There may be variance between samples of lenses produced by Voigtlander so you might find a good 35/1.4 that doesn't suffer from focus shift or back-focus. The answer is to try it first and check the results on a large monitor. Pete.

farnz Posted January 5, 2010 Share #9 Posted January 5, 2010 I was the one that made that thread and bought one despite what people said... and I like mine. I liked mine too because it was so small and fast but in the end I couldn't get reliable focus so it had to go. I'm glad to hear that you got a good one. Pete. Bo_Lorentzen Posted January 6, 2010 Share #10 Posted January 6, 2010 I like mine a lot, it is lovely for what I bought it for, wide open.! my personal copy have focus shift issues when stopped down and should be shot either wide-open or at f.5.6 (or less) The lens is very compact, light and easy to focus, great for being 1/8th the price of a 35 lux. . jsrockit Posted January 7, 2010 Share #11 Posted January 7, 2010 I looked at my recent f/1.4 SC photos versus my older f/2.5 pancake II lens I used prior and swear the pancake is the "better" lens. I did discover that my lens has focus issues... once I looked at some portraits I did I could tell and the pancake was accurate. I've also come to find that I like the more modern look of the pancake to my SC version for B&W and color. I'm going to sell my f/1.4 and either go with a summacron or back to the pancake. jsrockit Posted January 7, 2010 Share #15 Posted January 7, 2010 Please excuse my ignorance but what did you focus on? Pete. That's the reason I am not exactly happy with mine. It seems to be soft wide open. Even when I take extra special care with the focus, it is kind of soft. I didn't realize until I looked at the photographs I was making enlarged. farnz Posted January 7, 2010 Share #16 Posted January 7, 2010 focused on the eyes. Thanks; I wasn't trying to be difficult, I actually couldn't tell. I'm afraid nothing appears to me to be sharp in your photo. Pette.

Pette. it was shot through the snow ..not supposed to be clear. I was showing the mood this lens can capture in very low light.
jsrockit Posted January 8, 2010 Share #18 Posted January 8, 2010 it was shot through the snow ..not supposed to be clear. I was showing the mood this lens can capture in very low light. True, I didn't notice the blur of the snow, so you were handholding at a slow shutter speed...which would go against the sharpness of the lens... Maggie_O Posted January 9, 2010 Share #19 Posted January 9, 2010 I'm quite fond of mine, but it took two copies to get a good one. Sean Reid tested my first one and it was a mess. I exchanged it for another copy and the second lens has been fantastic for me. Here's my Flickr set of photos taken with it: Voigtländer Nokton Classic 35/1.4 - a set on Flickr
farnz Posted January 9, 2010 Share #20 Posted January 9, 2010 Maggie, Your second sample looks to be bang on! (I'm slightly envious because if mine had been this good I'd still have it.) I'm curious: many of your colour shots appear to show quite red skin tones - could that be from the absence of a UV/IR filter (although I not that your photo above shows one on the lens) or another reason? Pee.
