I prefer the color over the B&W version for this image because the color has a greater sense of depth from foreground to soft background. That's just my take, I'm sure other will differ. "I am perfectly happy with the M9 and 50mm with this........"fine..... I would have to be there with my DMR and 60MM to "show you"..when you would "see"..you would understand what I am saying. jaapv Posted January 4, 2010 Author Share #9 Posted January 4, 2010 Well, the difference in focal length between 50 and 60 mm lens is minimal, so that is not very relevant, I find the Summilux 50 asph reproduces textures better than my Macro Elmarit, and I would lose two stops of unsharpness and thus the effect of the image. I would not take my DMR and Macro-Elmarit in this case, in fact I didn't, despite the cameras lying side by side.. I must confess the macro-elmarit is not my favorite lens, because I dislike the bokeh.. Yes thew 50MM 1.4 Summmi is very sharp, I am painfully aware of that with Bill Hollinger posting some 100's( if not 1000's) of examples on this Forum a few years ago when the new 50 and the new 75 lux were all the rage. In the end I preferred the 75mm Lux, the 50 lux was "un-naturally sharp" sort of uber-photo look about it ..of course gorgeous bokeh. Your one of the few people I know who "dislike the 60mm Macro"..unusual response....like I said its a personal preference on my part...its hard to discuss on a forum like this, it would be better if you were here or I was at your place and I could demonstrate what I was talking about. robert_parker Posted January 4, 2010 Share #12 Posted January 4, 2010 This is potentially an interesting debate - as with John, I would have instinctively have reached for the DMR 60 combination for this shot but the M9 50ASPH is an interesting altenative - do you really think we are looking at 2 stops of additional sharpness, or is it the greater contrast of the ASPH lens we are considering ? (As you know I'm a devotee of the pre-ASPH version but what you're putting forward makes for an interesting option) Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
jaapv Posted January 4, 2010 Author Share #13 Posted January 4, 2010 It is, after all, a matter of taste. I prefer the more precise bokeh of the asph lenses. I believe that is what created the impressionist brush in this image. The older lenses are softer, sometimes a bit chaotic, even swirly, which I don't like as much. That would have been my problem (far too strong a word) with the Elmarit - plus losing two stops worth of unsharpness. Resolution as such is not that important, of course, but I feel the excellent microcontrast of the 50 asph outperforms the Elmarit. It is difficult to compare on different sensors. I have never used an R/DMR camera or R60....but if this could be improved upon I would love to see it. Since it sounds like you have the kit, how about giving it a whirl?
