topoxforddoc Posted January 1, 2010 Share #1 Posted January 1, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Here's an old 'un. I've been browsing my old negative files and wanted to see if I had a pic of Ayrton Senna in his first season in his Toleman - sadly not. Anyway, here's Jacques Lafite in the Honda Williams back in 1984. How things have changed in 25 years - the cars are less powerful now than they were in the turbo era and yet now the crowd are that much further away. I just loved the proximity of the crowd and the photographers in those days. Brands was my home race track as I grew up in Canterbury only about 40 miles away. I used to go there regularly. The last British GP there was in 1984. I much preferred it to Silverstone and still do. Best wishes,

elansprint72 Posted January 1, 2010 Share #2 Posted January 1, 2010 Those were the days! Lovely shot. Any more? I'd handed in my media pass by 84 but in the years just prior my Pictures Ed was fed up with telephoto shots and encouraged us to get close, where possible. This often left me feeling like some kind of matador. Attached is from Mallory Park. It is still possible to get close at a very few spots, although there is always a bit of Armco between "us and them" now, which was not the case back then. topoxforddoc Posted January 2, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted January 2, 2010 I only took one roll of film that day; medical students didn't have a huge amount of spare money for film - beer, yes, but not film!! Anyway here's another shot from that day - Marc Surer (17) in his Arrows-BMW about to be lapped by Elio De Angelis (11) in his Lotus-Renault and Michele Alboreto (27) in his Ferrari. steed Posted January 3, 2010 Share #5 Posted January 3, 2010 well done. if you had taken them 10-20 years earlier, when the cars were still poetry in motion, i would have tried to buy these shots off you for my library wall. John W

If it had been 10-20 years earlier, I would have been right up on the apex of the corner as a spectator. Fantastic! Sadly it's now all a bit sanitised.
