Julian Thompson Posted December 28, 2009 Share #1 Posted December 28, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Considering an MP and wanted to know if there are any firms in the UK that offer a pre-paid envelope and online account so that I can throw films into a bag and into the mail - then, without further interaction get my credit card charged with processing and scanning and have my negatives appear online in a secure vault from which I can download but within which they stay for backup! This is an attractive idea... Thanks in advance!

wattsy Posted December 28, 2009 Share #2 Posted December 28, 2009 Assuming you satisfy their criteria, you can open an account at Metro. They have an online contacts facility though I don't know if it works the way you want it to.
andybarton Posted December 28, 2009 Share #3 Posted December 28, 2009 Sounds to me like there is a business opportunity here somewhere, though. It's getting the scanning done to a suitable standard that's the expensive bit...
alun Posted December 29, 2009 Share #4 Posted December 29, 2009 Julian, Peter Gaffney/MetroLab in Birmingham (UK) used to provide a two-way pre-paid jiffybag mailing service that operates at least in part as you describe. The service still stands but I believe that postage is now charged. I used to have a wad of pre-paid postage address labels from them and simply mail negs with instructions and credit card details, they would develop and scan to CD (at 18Mb) and mail back the negs plus CD. There was no variant to the best of my knowledge that enabled customers to have the scans uploaded. This is still the basic service I use and it's very competitive -- about GBP 3.00 for dev, and about the same for scanning a 36-exp roll at 18Mb. I save the postal charges by walking the ten or fifteen minutes from my office to the lab to put film packages through the door and collect when ready. I haven't used it but the relatively recent Ilford Lab Direct Service Welcome to the ILFORD Lab Direct website - Black and white photo prints | Silver Gelatin prints | Black and white film processing prints | Black and White Prints from Film | Black and White Prints from Digital | Ilford Lab | Film processing lab looks as if it may operate closer to your requirements (B&W only).
