Clandrel Posted December 28, 2009 Share #1 Posted December 28, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I can get a new one, 6 bit coded, for $1995, or would you go for a used one? And in case, what should I be looking out for? I have a silver M8 so I'd love to have it in silver, but then I have to get a used one. What to do? sfokevin Posted December 28, 2009 Share #2 Posted December 28, 2009 Here is a used alternative: Used Leica | Telephoto 90mm f/2.8 Elmarit M Manual Focus Lens DAG can code it for $70 http://www.popflash.com/index.php?p=product&id=4480&parent=45 http://www.popflash.com/index.php?p=product&id=4351&parent=30 I personally own a pre asph 90/2 Summicron that DAG coded http://www.keh.com/Product-Details/1/LM06999103883N/LM06/FE.aspx
Jiukuic5609 Posted December 28, 2009 Share #3 Posted December 28, 2009 FWIW If you get a older tele-elmarit, you can pick it up for 400 dollars, AND the M8 recognizes the screw on the lens-mount as the proper lens coding :-) Good to know, though that DAG can code it... I am going to send the 90mm that I just got plus my M8 to get the rangefinder optimized and adjusted for this longer focal length (my M8 is currently a bit off at infinity resulting in a back-focus problem...) I just did a review of the T-Elmarit on my blog last week... -------------- Leica Tele-Elmarit 90mm Review Leica 90mm “thin” Tele-Elmarit Canada review for M8 Daniel Valente Photography

sfokevin Posted December 28, 2009 Share #6 Posted December 28, 2009 How bout this: Leica Summicron M 90mm/ 2 Silber - (3582) bei eBay.de: (endet 07.01.10 10:37:20 MEZ) I have a black version - Sweet lens... I think it has a better feel/proportion on my M8 than the Elmarit (which I sold)... And It gives you a bit more light... this one seems a bit pricey... http://cgi.ebay.com/Leica-M-Mount-2-90mm-Summicron-M-Silver_W0QQitemZ370299638362QQcmdZViewItemQQptZFilm_Cameras?hash=item563794125a
jaapv Posted December 28, 2009 Share #7 Posted December 28, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) But what I meant - even the black one is not a light lens, the chrome one is really a hefty piece of work.
andym911 Posted December 28, 2009 Share #8 Posted December 28, 2009 agree totally with Jaap.....A Thin Tele ELMARIT 2.8 or a nice Elmar are more usable IMO and due to their size and weight will get used more. regards andy

akiralx Posted December 28, 2009 Share #10 Posted December 28, 2009 I can get a new one, 6 bit coded, for $1995, or would you go for a used one?And in case, what should I be looking out for? I have a silver M8 so I'd love to have it in silver, but then I have to get a used one. What to do? I thought the 90mm Elmarit was phased out before 6-bit coding was introduced - so someone has had it coded later. No problem but can this lens still be considered new? Actually I have a chrome one, nice lens (don't use it much though, only on an M3), but the chrome is heavier. They go for no more than £500 in the UK. The 90 Summarit f/2.5 is an option if you want a small new 6-bit coded lens, or the alternatives above.

Jeff S Posted December 28, 2009 Share #12 Posted December 28, 2009 Well, the 90mm doesn't need coding to see correct in the VF... When I sent my 75 cron asph to Leica NJ for some minor service last year, I asked about whether I should bother to have them code it while there. The rep said he personally wouldn't spend the money. I appreciated the candor....and the savings. Jeff
andym911 Posted December 29, 2009 Share #13 Posted December 29, 2009 Regarding coding...have not coded any of my lenses and don't plan to, certainly not the 90mm unles you find the EXIF data useful which of course some may. andy
batmobile Posted December 29, 2009 Share #14 Posted December 29, 2009 I'd forget the coding and get a used one for 1/3 that price. You can get black ones for $600-800 and Chrome for a hundred or so more if you are a little patient.

epand56 Posted December 29, 2009 Share #16 Posted December 29, 2009 Clandrel, I have two 90mm, a late Elmarit 2.8 and an Elmar-C 4. When shooting in good lighrt condition, the Elmar-C is even lighter than the Elmarit and totally sharp. Plus, you can find it under 200 USD. I've been using it also indoor at expos and fairs, and in spite of f:4 I've got great results. The Elmarit is an outstanding lens, sharp and affordable. The black versioni s quite light. I can use mine even at night with very few lmitations. You can find a good one for 800 USD No coding needed for both. I had the chance to try the Summicron 90/2 but it was too heavy and big, and the results were about the same of the Elmarit.

I have a silver M8 so I'd love to have it in silver, but then I have to get a used one. What to do? Exactly what I did... and found one in silver two months ago for... probably less than 1000 US$ (650 Euros) - uncoded, but this doesn't matter, and with Leica UVIR: very fine lens, even if (as with all my old lenses) I was a little sad to abandon (on the shelf) my old Tele Elmarit "dwarf" which was unbeatable as for compactness, and used for hundreds of pics during 16 years...
