90mm Elmarit 2.8

FWIW If you get a older tele-elmarit, you can pick it up for 400 dollars, AND the M8 recognizes the screw on the lens-mount as the proper lens coding :-)

Good to know, though that DAG can code it...

I am going to send the 90mm that I just got plus my M8 to get the rangefinder optimized and adjusted for this longer focal length (my M8 is currently a bit off at infinity resulting in a back-focus problem...)

I just did a review of the T-Elmarit on my blog last week...

I have a black version - Sweet lens... I think it has a better feel/proportion on my M8 than the Elmarit (which I sold)...

And It gives you a bit more light... this one seems a bit pricey...

agree totally with Jaap.....A Thin Tele ELMARIT 2.8 or a nice Elmar are more usable IMO and due to their size and weight will get used more.

I agree, I have a 90 cron ( last pre-asph ) in my closet and a 90 elmarit in my camera bag.

The cron can't be beat for portraits

I can get a new one, 6 bit coded, for $1995, or would you go for a used one?

And in case, what should I be looking out for?

I have a silver M8 so I'd love to have it in silver, but then I have to get a used one.

What to do?

I thought the 90mm Elmarit was phased out before 6-bit coding was introduced - so someone has had it coded later. No problem but can this lens still be considered new?

Actually I have a chrome one, nice lens (don't use it much though, only on an M3), but the chrome is heavier. They go for no more than £500 in the UK.

The 90 Summarit f/2.5 is an option if you want a small new 6-bit coded lens, or the alternatives above.

Well, the 90mm doesn't need coding to see correct in the VF...

When I sent my 75 cron asph to Leica NJ for some minor service last year, I asked about whether I should bother to have them code it while there. The rep said he personally wouldn't spend the money. I appreciated the candor....and the savings.

Regarding coding...have not coded any of my lenses and don't plan to, certainly not the 90mm unles you find the EXIF data useful which of course some may.

andy

On the M9 coding 50 and shorter is advisable, as the camera applies corrections that are lens-specific.

Clandrel, I have two 90mm, a late Elmarit 2.8 and an Elmar-C 4.

When shooting in good lighrt condition, the Elmar-C is even lighter than the Elmarit and totally sharp. Plus, you can find it under 200 USD.

I've been using it also indoor at expos and fairs, and in spite of f:4 I've got great results.

The Elmarit is an outstanding lens, sharp and affordable. The black versioni s quite light. I can use mine even at night with very few lmitations. You can find a good one for 800 USD

No coding needed for both.

I had the chance to try the Summicron 90/2 but it was too heavy and big, and the results were about the same of the Elmarit.

I recently bought a used(mint condition) coded for $925. I would look around.

Exactly what I did... and found one in silver two months ago for... probably less than 1000 US$ (650 Euros) - uncoded, but this doesn't matter, and with Leica UVIR: very fine lens, even if (as with all my old lenses) I was a little sad to abandon (on the shelf) my old Tele Elmarit "dwarf" which was unbeatable as for compactness, and used for hundreds of pics during 16 years... :o
