filuz Posted December 26, 2009 Share #1 Posted December 26, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi everybody, I'm a young Leica user (from the photographic point of view ;-) and I've recently bought a M6 with the SUMMINCRON 35/2 ASPH. lens (see attached photo). The strange thing is that the depth of field scale on the lens seems to be the SUMMILUX version and not the SUMMICRON one because there's the "1.4" number reported and not "2". I've asked to the italian Leica service who asked to Leica headquarter and the answer was that there was an incredible error when the lens was produced. Of course Leica is available to get back the lens for the repair under warranty. So the question is: should I send back the lens free of charge in order to bring it back to original configuration but loosing the particularity of this unique sample? Many thanks for any suggestion. pop Posted December 26, 2009 Share #3 Posted December 26, 2009 You wouldn't gain anything by changing the value engraved on the scale. The depth of field is very small in either case, and it will still cover a smaller part of your distance scale than you can comfortably discern. Also, I think that the line next to the line labelled with 2.8 actually IS the line for 2.0. For large apertures, they seem to have dropped every other value. In short: don't change the scale. Sandokan Posted December 26, 2009 Share #4 Posted December 26, 2009 Keep it. Nothing to gain by a change but lots to talk about when you meet a leicaphile.
Mauribix Posted December 26, 2009 Share #5 Posted December 26, 2009 Filippo, I'd keep that lens as it is now... It could become something interesting for collectors! BTW, was this lens brand new? What serial number does this lens bring (more or less)... cheers, Maurizio
BenMacPhoto Posted December 26, 2009 Share #6 Posted December 26, 2009 I would keep it. Mistakes like this are rare and interesting.

luigi bertolotti Posted December 27, 2009 Share #9 Posted December 27, 2009 You have been simply LUCKY... probably the lens is perfectly Ok... the 1,4 isn't of any disturb, and makes it a tasty item... like the "made in Germay" or the "Elmar t" or the "Leitz Canada ldt."... Curios.. the Summicron asph 35 has indeed a single "2" where yours has "1,4"... but the two lines are straight while yours are a bit angled... so I'd say they did not mis-engrave the number... but simply mounted a Summilux ring

Luigi's guess is my guess too. That's a summilux 35's mount. Cool! BTW, thank you for your compliments, much appreciated! Keep on posting.
filuz Posted December 27, 2009 Author Share #11 Posted December 27, 2009 Thanks to all for suggestions. To say the truth, at the moment I'm not very interested in collectors' aspects. I've sold all my digital equipment to buy this film camera and lens that, as you know, is quite expensive, especially for an absolutely non professional photographer as I am. I really don't know if curious objects like this could gain interesting quotation. (That could be usefull in order to enlarge my equipment as my budget has already been excedeed ;-) Filippo

filuz Posted December 28, 2009 Author Share #13 Posted December 28, 2009 I followed your suggestion; I've just answered to the italian distributor that I will not substitute the wrong scale. I will keep the lens as is and I hope to have done the right thing, even if I will decide to sell it and try other lenses in the future. jhild Posted December 29, 2009 Share #18 Posted December 29, 2009 a lens is a tool, it might show signs of use if you really use it. It´s chrome, another worry as far as use is concerned, every small scratch will be very visible. I don´t think it will have a higher collector´s value because of the wrong engravings, especially as you are going to use it. Collectors like mint items, signs of use normally mean less money when selling it. I would have the lens repaired, without a doubt. Sometimes it can be very useful to calculate a shot with the correct dephs of field scale. To me this lens would certainly be of reduced value, due for repair after buying it. Finally think about this, it could be a Summilux with thr wrong lens barel mounted, so what is it? It´s not this or that, it´s nothing. Just my few cents, happy new year Jo
