This afternoon after shooting about 20 exposures with the M8 all of a suddenly my shutter went biiip.... and the display said "Attention Shutter fault" :(

(That would have been the end of that shoot if it wasn't for my M6 and the D-Lux 4 :) that I fortunately also brought with me)

Is there anybody out there who has had that same experience and perhaps know a remedy besides handing the body over for repair ?

Thanks very much in advance for any advice.....

Marie-Louise,

Sorry to hear about your biiip! :( Can we assume that you've replaced the battery with a freshly charged one and that you still get the same error message?

Were you by any chance shooting in Continuous mode with the Discreet option enabled? There have been reports of a couple of M8's getting terribly confused when someone's holding the shutter release down to shoot continuously while the M8's also trying to delay the shutter re-cock. Poor thing doesn't know which way to turn and throws a wobbly, shuts up shop and displays the "Attention: Shutter fault" notice in its front window (or rear window to be accurate).

IIRC the fault was cleared by removing and replacing the battery so I hope yours is no more serious than that. If it is then I fear your M8 may be in for a trip to the Solms Correctional Facility for Wayward Cameras. :(

Pete.

Thanks a lot for the quick response, Pete !

I really appreciate it :)

Unfortunately, I didn't succeed in making the shutter function again despite all your good advice. So I'll have to make a trip to the dealer's shop on Monday.....

It's incredible how sorry and impatient one gets when a thing like that happens :o

I guess you'll see a lot of D-Lux and M6 images for a while ;)

It happened to me while under warranty, and the repair spent only a few days in the shop in Leica USA, in NJ. I subsequently upgraded that camera to M8u, and have had no trouble for the next 10,000 exposures. I was shooting rapidly, but not using C mode, and at that time there was no discreet function available.

You might consider the shutter upgrade and other improvements when you get the shutter fault cleared.

I had the same problem, tried all the suggested method found on the internet but no luck. So I sent it back to Leica NJ for warranty repair. Turnaround time was two weeks (just got it back Christmas (12/23). The shutter was replaced. I now am staying away from using "C", and "Discreet", not sure if that caused the problem though... I hope yours is fixed soon.

Thank you very much all....!

I really appreciate you took time to share your experiences !

I didn't shoot in C-mode (not intendedly at least, but when turning on the camera with winter cold fingers I might have done so without realising it...:o ) but I did shoot rapidly.

The camera is now on its way to Germany for repairs under the warranty.

I will consider a shutter upgrade once I get it back - in not too far a future hopefully !

Yesterday 25 minutes before 0:00 my leica give me this terrible message. I was in discreet and perhaps selector goes from S to C. My end of 2009 and start of 2010 was orrible. I came back home very early and go to sleep let battery charging. In the morning i put battery into camera but i have the similar response "shutter fault". I was very sad. Then I put the camera base 3 times in my hand in same velocity and hardness of a clapping hands and shutter WHRRRRRRR cock again and feel me happy.

I've bought camera in used store with a non written 1 year warranty so I was very scared about sending back to Solms.
