Yestreday, I purchased a brand new Leica M8.2....but to my surprise, the serial number on top of the camera does not correspond to the serial number on the box....

Is the serial number engraved on the flash hot shoe, or am I looking at something wrongly...?

Please let me know.

Thanks,

P

the interesting part is that when I go onto the Leica website and want to register the products I get a error code saying that the serial number on the camera is invalid or already in use...

Unfreaking believable....

Not necessarily.

If it's the number on the camera body itself that's already registered, then it's the camera that's not new.

I'd be straight back to the shop at 9am the next time they open.

In the meantime, enjoy using the camera over the weekend :)

Did you buy from a authorized dealer?I just got a demo m8 w/box(calumet photo,Chicago),I lucked out since it was never registered so I also got A full warranty and the two free filter offers within 10 days of registering it.If I were you I'd call leica with the serial number and find out if the camera really was registered.if it was then I'd return it for another or get your money back.

Do you have the correct paperwork for your camera, or does that match the number on the box? It sounds as though your dealer has made a mistake in re-packing. I would suggest contacting the dealer first, and if they don't have the correct box/paperwork, then I would suggest contacting Leica. I'm sure that they can easily correct things for you. As your serial number has already been registered, I would guess that whoever has your box used that number to register their camera. Good luck.

Edit: I see that you've already answered my question regarding the paperwork, so it must be a dealer error.

That is, the box that goes with your camera, not the box in your possession.

That's a good point. The camera may be new (check the shutter actuations), but the camera's real box has been given to someone else who has mistakenly registered the box, not the camera...

Good job that this isn't confusing :)

How many actuations on the camera? Registering it will be just a matter of sending an e-mail to Leica with a scan of the invoice, I'm sure. Just call Minderman Monday. You can find the number of actuations by reading the hex number in Exif. It should be somewhere below 200. I remember you mailing me the dealer said they take cameras from the boxes to check them - It is concievable the boxes got mixed up. What about the numbers on the paperwork?

At this stage I would not be too concerned about the fact that that the Leica website will not let you register your number as it is 'already in use'.

I had the same problem when I tried to register my M8 which I purchased second hand from an authorised dealer in the UK. I double checked my entry of the serial number to be sure that the error was not me (usually is!).

I was concerned, so I I contacted Leica who eventually confirmed that the error was their error and sorted the problem out - I was then able to register.

It is perhaps possible that someone has already purchased another camera with your box number and registered the number from the box and not from the engraved number on their camera.

But you do need to contact the dealer and sort out the box as others have said.

Merry Christmas & good luck,

Nick.

Is it image unique ID that I need to look for?

If so, first image that I took was image 53....

Am I looking correctly?

Jaap, I didn't end up buying it at Minderman...

Ok. Anyway. 319*** is an M8 number, 355*** is an M8.2 number. So it is simply in the wrong box. No problem I think. The registering problem occurs often. I'll try and call you during the day, it will probably take a bit, as I have family stuff going on.

That is what I think also....but also wrong papers inside the box...

I hope Leica can re-issue these or I will ask new camera or money back.

I think I will visit them on Sunday.

So does it say M8 on the box and not M8.2?

Box says 8.2.....instruction manual says 8.2....camera is 8.2....but the serial number on the camera doesn't match with the serial number on the box and in the test certificate....
