Lightroom Download

For those you who registered your M9 and got the code to download, i have a few questions.

1. Does the code expire?

2. Anyone know if it can be saved to use for Lightroom 3? Being in beta stages now, I would suspect the real version will be available around spring.

I already own LR2 so I would rather wait so I don't have to pay to upgrade.

So what is it that you actually get, when you register the M9?

I mean, i can go download a fully working 30 day copy of lightroom right now.

So what is Leica giving you? Some kind of coupon code for a free serial number?

In the documentation that comes with the M9, you get a serial number to activate a download of the current version of Lightroom. You are allotted to downloads of the software, or you can contact Addobe and for an additional US$20, you can get the software in CD format.

Thank you.

I have the TAN# for the download, but not a LR serial#.

Does the software download straight from the Leica website?

I'm also leery of using up one download now and then another later because I have two computers and would like to download to each.

Yes thank you, i know about the LR3 beta. Anyone in the world can download that. As anyone can download a full working 30 day copy of LR2 from adobe's website. I'm just trying to understand how us Leica owners differ from the general public. Are we getting an actual serial number? If I want to be able to download the real version of LR3 (not the beta) do I need to wait to register my M9 when LR3 comes out? Or can I register now and save whatever it is that Leica gives me and then use it at this later time? Why didn't Leica just include a software cd? Or an actual serial number in the box? I assume this it to make sure we get the latest and greatest version. But I don't want to waste either of my two free downloads, which is why I'm trying to fully understand the process first.

You get a serial number for the full unlocked, never to expire version of Lightroom. But, only when you have registered your purchase.

As far as I know, the time you use the Serial Number is up to you. If you want to wait until LR3 comes out in the Spring, then that's your choice.

Leica didn't include the software in the box because a) that costs money and B) it encourages purchasers to register their products with them. It also means that you can choose to wait a couple of months to download the next version.

Ok, so this is what worries me.

Since LR3 is not out yet and won't be for a while, LR3 serial numbers have not been generated yet by Adobe. So if I was to register with Leica right now and they give me an actual LR serial number, it would be for LR2 which I already own. Now if they were going to give me some kind of coupon code that allows me to go to adobe and trade for a serial number, that I could do now and just save.

Does this make sense?

Am I understanding this correctly?

I had a quiet word with someone I know at Adobe UK and the answer he gave me was as follows:

The codes that Adobe give Leica are dated and will only work for LR 2.X. As and when the final commercial version of LR3 comes out, Leica and Adobe will have to coordinate to issue a new type of code for LR3, unless there is a change of heart at Adobe (unlikely) or Leica negotiates something different. If you buy a camera after the issue date of LR3 and it only had the LR 2.X code, you would have to go back to Leica and ask for an exchange code for LR3. The Leica provided copy of LR 2.X will be eligible for normal upgrade pricing, likely to be $99. I am holding onto my unused LR2 code, just in case the Adobe guy was giving me a load of BS.

In which case its staggering that Leica don't know the code is time limited, or they would have said so, wouldn't they? Its not like you get a warning that its urgent that you register or anything, you are just told that the latest version of Lightroom is waiting when you do register. There could be a million reasons not to register it immediately, the most obvious one being that people are not stupid and would want LR3. Its feels like an email to Leica is in order to clarify this.

How many days does one have to register the camera after purchase? When I bought a lens here in the US, the accompanying card said 30 days or something like that.

I think that registering the camera (for guarantee/passport purposes) and exercising the Lightroom code are two separate issues.
