grober Posted December 22, 2009 Share #1 Posted December 22, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) As a recovering M-user of 43 years, I'm wondering how one gauges depth of field (DOF) with the X1? Memorize Leica DOF tables for the 24mm Elmarit? There was no etched DOF scale on the pre-production X1 I handled. What to do? (Please don't start with any rants about the X1's reportedly slow auto focusing. This is strictly a DOF thread!) -g

wda Posted December 22, 2009 Share #2 Posted December 22, 2009 Grober, I don't know the answer; few will until delivery starts. But I think with any wide angle lens it is very difficult to achieve a shallow depth of field, even at full aperture. It is easier with close focus settings. As to knowing just how much DOF you can achieve, I would forget about tables. Just shoot, assess results and note for future reference. I am sure that DOF will be one of the lesser challenges! There is always a learning curve with any new camera and lens. There is no substitute for scheduling a trial period before shooting anything vitally important. But I guess you know that. lct Posted December 22, 2009 Share #3 Posted December 22, 2009 Suffice it to do the math or use a DoF converter and choose a 24mm lens with any APS-C body. To make it simple, DoF will be close to that of a 28mm lens on a 35mm camera.
