Yes, I liked the natural colour setting too at night. I am now back att home and will try to install Lightroom. I hope I can get some improvement compared to the jpg:s. A few of the pics I posted are in my opinion a bit overexposed, and at least there it should be easy to get the results improved. But this will take some time and effort along the learning curve.

Here is a picture I have cropped from an iso3200 image taken in Frankfurt am Main on my first day with the X1. Shutter time was 1/60s and aperture F2.8.

. . . I hate that my M8 doesn't shoot as clean and that I can't afford an X1 at the moment.

Me too. In order to return my universe to its proper axis and get on with life, I sold my M8 and quickly pre-ordered an X1.

You can get through this: sell the Eight.

The cup on the pic above may have some of the X1's sharpening effect? It was shot with the sharpening setting at "standard". I have now learned that it is better to have sharpening=low and to any sharpening in a more controlled way in Lightroom.

...

My own impression after three days is that the performance at iso3200 is certaily good enough to be useful. If photos are enlarged or cropped there will be visible noise but the noise is to my eye low enough to keep the iso3200 useful in low light conditions. I kept the camera at iso3200 for most of the night and only switched to iso1600 a couple of times when there was some stronger light source nearby.

thomsva, thank you for posting these pictures which represent quite a severe test for a compact. I think they are impressive considering there is no post-processing. My own tests have been up to ISO 1250 indoors in low ambient light and I was quite amazed after my experience with the M8 (which I like very much).

I think that your reservations about the quality of big enlargements at extreme ISOs should be put 'on hold' until you have the chance to use a noise reduction feature in Lightroom or with Noise Ninja, for example. All-in-all I think many people will be amazed at the camera's performance at high ISOs.

This is my first B/W with the X1 its a cool camera and I see it replacing my Digilux 2 as my main camera

Love the pic. I have my name on the X1 waiting list at the Leica shop here in Hamburg. Can't wait to start shooting with it! I realise the camera's full IQ potential will only present in the RAW files, but how do the JPEGs straight out of the camera look? I have read conflicting reports.

Does X1 has default NR build in? This is only my 2nd day with the X1 and haven't really have time to look at everything extensively yet. But so far, the X1 is actually cleaner at ISO3200 vs my 5DII with or w/o NR! The WB on the X1 is almost spot on compares to the 5DII as well, real shocker...

I just converted the photo to B/W in lightroom, I just turned the saturation slider down and adjusted the contrast a bit. This is my first attempt at using lightroom unfortunately I am not very good at post processing. The one thing I love about the X1 is that it is the only digital camera I have used that produces images so clear and sharp that the quality is as good as my old film cameras.

Damsharp you can choose b/w within the X1

larbel I think that because the sensor is large their is hardly any noise in the pictures. not to sure though

stephan.w The jpgs are very good you have presets for contrast, sharpness and saturation and film type so you can adjust the camera to shoot to your liking. I am just learning that raw is better though.

For those new to digital photography and who want top quality pictures, definitely shoot RAW. Lightroom does an excellent job with conversion and also gives you a variety of options before you export a copy for web or print etc.Take advantage of the Library feature which will simplify later retrieval of desired library pictures.

Lightroom is a fantastic programme which gets better with each version. I am amazed it handles the X1 files so well; but as LR is bundled with the X, Adobe have probably devoted time to getting it right!

Spend time learning LR and you will be rewarded for your investment. Google for on-line tutorials. There are several good books available. Look at Amazon and read the reviews. I personally favour the books by Martin Evening who combines extreme thoroughness with liberal illustrations. Once you have mastered the basics, you can dip in whenever you need more information to produce your ideal work-flow.

Douglasco, have you tried using the Lightroom black and white presets? There are some interesting options even before you resort to fine tuning your pictures.

Second, don't part with your Digilux 2 even if the X1 replaces it as your main camera. Apart from having a lower resolution, it does have one of the finest Leica zoom lenses and can reach further with its 90mm setting, giving a more natural perspective for portraits, than the 36mm equivalent in the X1. It is also better for macro especially with the Elpro attachment. That is not to say that the X1 is not suitable for portraiture. It is fine for showing the environmental setting with a person at its prime focal length, as your shop-keeper portrait shows so well.

WDA

thanks for the info I did not know lightroom had black and white presets so I just experimented a bit. I wish lightroom came with a manual, I have just purchased a book on how to use lightroom so I hope to get into it a bit more now. yes you are right about the Digilux 2 I would miss its lens I have taken some nice photos with it in the past.
