Which used 28mm Lenses from Leica are worth looking into? I would prefer an M Mount, but screw mount would be ok. I don't want to afford a new one, so I'm looking at used.

1) Which would be the cheapest one worth considering and why?

2) What's available under $1000 that is good?

I've always used 35mm and 50mm leica lenses...but now that I'm using an M8, I need a 28mm.

I already have a Voigtlander 35mm, so I'd like to have a true Leica lens this time.

Only possibilities are an Elmarit 28 of the 3rd type, or a Summaron 5,6 in screw mount... but I fear that, for both, the 1000$ tag isn't so easy to reach for a very good item (and is much better it IS very good). Of course, the Summaron has a distinctive limitation in aperture, but is exceptionally compact and a very good performer around 8-11: perfect for M8, beacuse vignetting is cropped away, and has a std. E39 mount for UVIR filter... hood is an issue: not easy to find, and costly. Coding can be managed through a proper LTM adapter.

Apart the Summaron, I have a 3.162.xxx Elmarit 3rd of 1982... I paid it the equivalent of 700 US$ 8 or 10 years ago (with hood and case) : difficult to hand code for M8 (and impossible under Leica rules) but a lens of great performances: at the moment, is my std. 28 for M8 (but has lost appeal when I discovered how good and useful is the Elmarit 24...;))

An interesting opportunity could be a Rokkor 2,8 for Minolta CL = Leica CL... I seem to have red good reviews on it, though is not common (but not too costly, too)
