Azzo,

My all time favourite. Honestly.

That's the image that made me realise there could be a photographer behind the camera. Years later ......... :D

 Could be interpreted in two ways. ..

a) It took me years to come this far. Or ..

B) It took you years to finally realize & recognize me as a photographer.

As they say, "Better late than never!" applies to both a&b. ... :D

In any which case, I thank you my Amico.

. . . . . . . :)

Wrong on both accounts as I'm firstly referring to the time of your posting 4 years ago ...

Years later, we love you more; have uncontained respect;; await every new thread with great anticipation; ........ are you hearing me Valletta ......... come in Valletta ......... are you there Valletta ......... Valletta, we have lift-off .....

Having shot with Leicas since 1967 I have quite a few images.

So I had to think, "What is a classic Leica Image?". Probably B&W, likely taken at a historical event, on the street, or in low light. A picture made quickly. And perhaps some humor regarding life.

Here are a few that come to mind:

#1 Peace October 15 1969 Denver-- Viet Nam Moratorium Leica M3, 50mm Summicron

#2 Bunny Mid '90's Chicago M6, 50mm Summicron

#3 2 Couples Mid 90's Milan M6 35mm Summicron

#4 Last Light Hiking Early 90's Sydney M2 50mm Summicron

#5 That's Him Mid 90's Chicago, M6 90mm Elmar

I think this was done with a M4-P and 135 Tele-elmar during a street carnival.

A Leica image, to me, is supposed to be a honest representation of any given scene. Unadultered by the photographer, without any gross manipulations.

Unraped by photoshop and programs that can be used to change the original scene.

A Good Leica M photographer will capture the essence, the soul of a moment by simply clicking the shutter.

An inexperienced photographer will capture nothing and will hopelessly try to insufflate, by cropping or post-processing, any kind of soul to the image. Hopelessly.

A True Leica image is supposed to be, to me, a very simple image of a stolen moment where the light is hitting the subject and fully understood by the photographer. Where the whole work has been done before and during the image acquisition. Where clicking the shutter is the sum of many mental actions and years of understanding how seeing translates photographically.

A Leica image is done once the second shutter has closed. Never afterward. It will never be born in a program but will rather die in photoshop.

I expect some folks to jump on me, yet again, for having my own personal views. But it won't change my perception of imposture when I see doctored-to-death images... Which are about anything they wish but not about what Leica is about.

Ivan - the second shot appears to have been taken with an X-Pan... in which case it should be removed. How can it be a most Leica shot?

I deleted my comment before you put this question Andy.

So it seems I was right. I was in fact missing something !

ps The reason I decided to delete my first comment was that, " I couldn't be bothered ! "

Ned, I almost agree with anything you said, even if I remember I was used to do some "Photoshop" work also when printing my B&W film pictures in the darkroom. There were dozens of ways to correct that "Leica" picture that was missing something. Oh, I was sometimes used to crop too, as anybody did.

On the other hand, isn't your second picture here widely cropped?

This said I agree that the computer allows a photographer to go beyond the necessary work on a picture and push him to lose control over the PP.

The second shot is an xpan shot, uncropped, of course. The first is with the Noctilux.

If ivan didn't know, the term "xpan" designates a camera, not a photoshop action. Ivan should know better and should have better things to do then being stuck on my back.

I decided to post this image because it embodies what I said earlier about the Leica state of mind and it going beyond the equipment, giving way for the vision to come thru. I guess it's more philosophical then strictly gear talk. And Leica, to me, is philosophical by extension.
