Digilux 2 advice needed ASAP! (do i keep it or not?)

My D2 arrived a couple days ago and I love it. Unfortunately it has a few issues. The flash performance is buggy (sometimes works, sometimes doesn't, bounce flash only lights top half of the frame/subject), the zoom ring on the lens sticks (works fine once you get it moving, but sticks at the 28, 90 marks, making it hard to zoom from those settings conveniently) and the evf has what looks like a bunch of dirt on the inner screen. At first it wasn't distracting, but it makes it very hard to use the EVF and focus manually.

My question is this: should I keep this one or return it and hope I find a better one. Are these issues other D2 users have seen and learned to live with, or did I just get a clunker?

The seller will provide a full refund, so thats not a problem. I'm just remembering how hard it was to find this one and how much time I have to find one before I leave the country for a business trip. Am I better of with a D2 with a couple issues, or do I send it back and maybe end up with no camera at all? I'm half tempted to buy an old CL and try the 1 camera 1 lens challenge...

That's a very generous offer, John. :)

Sgilder, I have a couple of D2s both bought used and neither has the 'features' that you mention so it sounds to me like you got a lemon and you should go for the refund. D2s aren't that rare yet; I understand that Popflash occasionally has refurbished ones for sale and that online auction site usually has one or two (if you're careful).

will the seller let you use it on your trip before doing a refund? have you told him about the issues? what did he say? was it sold as a "bargain"?

not knowing what you paid for it, i would send it back unless you got it for an absolute bargain (?).

i am not expert in digital camera flash / curtain synch, but in the film days i would say your flash is not synched to your shutter curtain which would explain the partial frame coverage. (but a simpler possibility is that the flash is seriously misaligned .... but then how would it close?)

your best option ..... take John T's custom leather D2 and skip the country :D

Sglider, sorry you did not get a minty D2.

Mine is not perfect either.

The flash seems to work, but I've only used it a couple of time (I don't like flash). I'll test it some more.

I have a couple of specs of dirt in the view finders that appear like bugs on a windshield - I don't like them but they don't have much of an impact on focusing. I find that using the 2X viewfinder option (i.e. use the full screen for focusing) works much better for me than the default option BTW.

My zoom does not stick, but the focus ring offers a bit of extra resistance from the closest length to about 0.8m. Perhaps the extra resistance at the beginning is intentional.

In other words, not perfect, but acceptable. I paid $550 (+$50 for having it delivered at work since I could not leave) for mine.

I am not sure how much you paid for yours, and whether that amount represents a little or a lot of disposable income. But, assuming it's not a huge sum for you, I would be inclined to keep it and - possibly - get it repaired somewhere down the line if you find that you really like it.

I hope this helps you a bit.

Alberto

PS

Question for the more experience users on this forum:

Can the dirt/specs in the viewfinder be cleaned? How did it get there in the first place?

I've told the seller about the issues and he was very apologetic. He's offered to see what it would take for Leica to fix it, and offered a full refund as well. I'm afraid I did not get a bargain on this one. I paid about $750 for a d2 in pretty good cosmetic condition with only the lens cap, charger, and manual (no hood, cords, software, etc.). With the issues I'm finding, I feel like I overpaid. If I had gotten it for a bargain price, then yeah I'd be more willing to live with this one's quirks and maybe get it fixed later. I'm not mad at the seller, he honestly didn't know about the stuff on the EVF or the zoom ring, and he seems very willing to work this out. Like I said in the original post the camera is functional, but not quite what I expected. I think I will be sending it back. John, thanks for the incredibly generous offer. I'll be PM'ing you later today.

Get me the shipping information ASAP. The camera is in Ohio with a friend. He's got the camera and charger... maybe an extra battery. Unfortunately, all the box, books etc are here. But we'll get you what you need to take great photos. PS... forget manual focus and the viewfinder. The auto focus is superb.

I'm glad to hear the seller is willing to refund your money. I paid $600.00 for mine with an extra battery, and a camera bag. Thankfully I haven't had any issues with it. Cosmetically and otherwise it is in excellent + condition, it actually looks new. I've been enjoying this camera more than I thought I would. Good luck.
