jagsiva Posted December 17, 2009 Share #1 Posted December 17, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Zeiss 21mm Comparison While I always find his writings interesting, I can't help but think he'd be taken a little more seriously if he did'nt try so hard to invalidate his views... "The LEICA is a smidgeon sharper, but not by much. IN this case, the LEICA M9's superior American-made sensor lets it outperform Nikon and Canon's imported sensors"

novice9 Posted December 17, 2009 Share #4 Posted December 17, 2009 i wonder how kr processes his files. regarding his remarks on color, my guess is that he doesn't have a clue how to convert files in order to maintain or target color. of course, he provides no information whatsoever on his methodology. haroldp Posted December 17, 2009 Share #5 Posted December 17, 2009 KR sometimes has useful info, but you must always look into the details of his methods, and know his biases to determine how relevant any of this might be to you. In the case of this particular report, which purports to be a lens test, there are several such issues that anyone making a buy / use decision should be aware of: - The 24 mp Nikon D3x is the obvious vehicle to test Nikon's best lenses. KR has a bee in his bonnet over the price of the Nikon D3x, his price 'ceiling' of USD $ 7,000 is completely arbitrary and was introduced into KR lore at the same time as the M9 so that he could include the M9 and Exclude the D3x. - Nikon Raw files in such a comparison should only be processed with Nikon Capture NX2, since NX2 applies correction for lateral and axial chromatic abberations, which can be significant in corners. These corrections are applied in-camera for JPG, but not to NEF's. Lens / Camera combos's that auto correct digitally should only be tested as a 'system' and in the case of Nikon Raw, Capture NX2 is a part of that system. - I have no Canon equipment, so cannot comment on it, but I assume that Nikon and Canon are competitive across the board in IQ. - The continental location of the manufactory for the sensor, is probably much less relevant than Leica not using an AA filter. In addition to greater pixel density, the Nikon D3x has a much less agressive AA filter than the D3. - I use both nikon D3 and D3x and 14-24. I also use Leica M9 and 16-21 WATE (which would have been a much more useful comparison to Nikon and Canon Zooms ), and current version Zeiss 21/2.8 for Leica. At f2.8, in the corners, the Zeiss wins. At f4 or smaller, while there is certainly a different 'look', there is not enough defference in IQ to talk about. When deciding whether to take D3x / 14-24, or M9 / WATE on a shoot, the decision factors are not IQ related but about handling, discreteness etc. I do wish that Nikon would make an f4, smaller and lighter version of it's f2.8 pro zooms. While Leica's usually win hands down in handling, The addition of the Frankenfinder is a pretty good equalizer. Given KR's casual approach to post processing, any comments about color should be discounted, color can be whatever you want it to be. Regards and Happy Holidays to all ... gwelland Posted December 17, 2009 Share #6 Posted December 17, 2009 Quick junk food style review - not that bad - Kentucky Fried Chicken, I would say:D In this case I have a higher regard for KFC. This is much more McDonalds dollar menu material. I've never had results like that with my 14-24 with either my D700 or D3x using NX2. Ever. The Zeiss and WATE looked as expected. If he used the same crappy workflow with those lenses then I would expect them to both look even better.
jklotz Posted December 17, 2009 Share #7 Posted December 17, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) You have to read the disclaimer before taking it too seriously folks.
