my X1 dilemma

When the X1 was introduced I was thinking it would make a great vacation camera and/or something to carry around all the time and not worry about. I would want a camera that could still produce agency-acceptable photos, and the X1 could fit the bill with its relatively large sensor. Then I saw the price tag.

It's not a discussion about if it's worth the price, it may very well be for certain people. But I do understand worrying about the value of equipment you're carrying all the time. And this is coming from someone who is carrying two M9s to rough areas for my professional work:D

The X1 is a no-go for me because of the price. If another similar camera were offered at $800-1000USD, I might consider it. But I'm leaning towards just picking up a used M8 as a bang-around camera and also a backup to my M9s. It's ironic since I just sold both of my M8s, but the way prices are going I'm glad I sold them when I did, I'll still end up making a profit!

The Olympus EP-2 runs $1100 and has lesser image quality.

The oly does have additional features, but like many high-end products (particularly Leica) you're paying some for what it doesn't have. Depending on what the final test of how well it works for me, I'm not sure it's that far out of line.

I have bought and sold (or given away to relatives) more point and shoot cameras than I care to think about. I buy them in a quest for a take anywhere camera, but I am always disappointed in the image quality. Finally, it appears the X1 will address my wishes for a small take anywhere camera with very good image quality.

As for the OP's delima, I can kinda sorta understand it, but only for a moment. Then I think about all of the other expensive items we or our spouses carry with or on us on daily basis without a thought. For example, I bought my wife a very nice diamond ring for our anniversary a while back and there is no way I would expect her not to wear it because it is too valuable. I couldn't see myself saying to my wife, "I was going to get you a diamond for our anniversary, but I was afraid you would wear it so please be happy with the thought instead of the diamond." I insured the ring immediately and my wife happily wears the ring everywhere.

What is the point in having nice things if you can't enjoy them. Additionally, what is the point in working if you can't indulge yourself or loved ones on occasion.

You know, when I think back about it I carried a minilux with me just about everywhere between 1996 and 1999. It went with me to about a dozen different countries on at least two continents. I carried it with and without a case. I didn't abuse it and always looked after it, but certainly didn't baby it, either. When I sold it, it still looked mostly new. Maybe a small scratch here and there, but that was it. All the same can pretty much be said of the MP I've owned since 2004. If you are reasonably careful you won't trash it.

It's a camera. Not the Torah. Or the Bible. Or the Koran. Or the Analects. Or the Bhagavad Gita. It's to be used. Not worshipped on holy days.Throw it in your bag. Take it out. Use it. Enjoy it. And if you enjoy it, price won't matter. People buy $300,000 boats and use them on a few weekends for a few months of the year. People spring $17,000 (and more) for a Harley Davidson and take them out for Sunday rides in balmy weather (and sometimes not so balmy). In the diamond ring example, it's not even used. Just worn.

For me, I use a camera whenever, wherever. When I had an M6 I never thought, "Oh, maybe I shouldn't take it the camera out today. It might get hurt." I just took the damned thing out wherever and whenever and got great shots when I did. No regrets. Except if I DIDN'T use it. That would be a shame.

Look at Imants' shot of his Epson. Now there's a guy with no regrets. (I think.)

the issue is not whether to use expensive cameras - obviously if you're on this forum you're using an expensive camera. I take my M7 on every trip I take, domestic and overseas and usually also my M8 until I sold it a few months ago. I think my discomfort is that point and shoots have for me always been small inexpensive cameras that seemed to suit a casual, carefree style of shooting. You didn't worry about them, you just throw them in your bag or your pocket (or your bike pouch, etc.) and go. It's a very spontaneous thing to grab your olympus XA everytime you head out the door. I'm just wondering if substituting an X1 for the XA will feel just as carefree.

I understand its a personal thing so I don't expect everyone to agree, I was just curious if anyone else shares this concern.

The camera's ok, the LCD, glass, VF are clear and in alignment is spot on............. Just don't leave it in a box full of gravel

I have a XA and a ricoh GR1 both film but a digital X1 or ricoh would win out, big great IQ files so much more convenient than film................just put a protector on the LCD and in a plastic sandwich bag,..........................then put it in the box of gravel

The X1 is not a point and shoot... that is where your thinking went wrong. :p

let's not get caught up in semantics..its obvious I'm talking of its function as a small lighweight take-everywhere camera and not its manual control capability. You can name the category if you want.

You said carefree style of shooting... the X1 is a serious camera. :D

Rubbish... stop splitting hairs. The camera is just a tool, how you use it and the mood that you are in at the time are up to you.

Yes, I understand. Did you see the smile icon? Did I ever say that a P&S is not a good tool? I just said the Leica is more serious than the average P&S... which there is no debating.

Why am I being singled out for sticking up for the X1 ion a Leica site?

I like most everything about the X1. Its the camera I hoped Leica would make, a small go-everywhere camera with great image quality and a simple, intuitive interface. Yes, its expensive but its not the price per se that worries me. My problem is whether I really want to carry a $2,000 camera with me everywhere I go, everyday? Do I really want to worry about it getting stolen, lost, banged around in my coat pocket or backpack (and no, I don't really want to carry a camera bag with me everyday, everywhere I go)? It just seems like it would take some of the fun and spontaneity out of taking pictures and replace it with a low-level anxiety about protecting expensive gear. Yes it will take better pictures than an LX3 or Canon S90 but those are still very capable cameras and at under $400, very replaceable.

So that's my dilemma. Anyone else share this feeling?

I take my M8 everywhere with me and do not mind about it being stolen, banged, exploded or disintegrated. And the lenses mounted on it are often more expensive than a X1. It is my camera and comes with me most of the time. That's what a camera is made for. I just keep a little more care than I would for a 300 euros point-and-shoot.

So I would not worry too much about it if I were you. If you like it, get it and keep it in your pocket all the time.

yes, I think you have the right approach there.
