From D-LUX 4 to X1

I always soot in 24mm and 90% in 3:2 image ratio and I like the easiness of the compact camera.

  • Does it make sense to step up from my D-LUX 4 to the X1?

  • Is there significant difference in the quality of image?

  • Is it worth the $$?

All suggestions are welcome.

X1 it's not an upgrade for d-lux4. in my opinion is something complementary. X1 have 2 major strengths over d-lux4:

- bigger and better sensor which allow good high ISO captures

- excellent analog controls for manual mode operation

but prepare to overcome the limitations:

- not as wide as d-lux (it's a lot of field between 24 and 35)

- zoom entirely by feets (I use my d-lux only at the edges of zoom and looks like 2 primes 24 and 60)

- no fullHD video which is quite convenient for me (d-lux is quite OK for snapshot videos with my kids and I don't need to carry extra camera around).

In my personal opinion (not shared by my wife, of course ;) a combination of d-lux4 and x1 it's a perfect gear for a enthusiastic photographer.

1) Well, I'm not sure what you like to take photographs of or what your skill level is.

2) Most likely

3) You are paying an early adopters fee for having a small camera with a large sensor and a Leica tax for the red badge. Is it worth it to you?

It seems like a natural progression - fixed focal-length lens, bigger sensor.

My hope is that the X1 will handle more like a camera and less like a gadget.

I've no trepidations about being able to choose between the X1 and D-Lux 4 for use.

(That is, once the X1 finally arrives - it's been nearly 100 days since the announcement.)

Hopefully they are stepping-stones to an M9.

BTW, if I had the D-Lux 4 Ti, I would stow it away as a collector's piece.
