wparsonsgisnet Posted December 4, 2006 Share #1 Posted December 4, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am wondering if the first version M8's will become collectibles if the owners don't send them for the hardware update.
Advertisement Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 Hi wparsonsgisnet, Take a look here Will busted M8 become a collectible? . I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
earleygallery Posted December 4, 2006 Share #2 Posted December 4, 2006 Only if the box is sealed/never opened.
wparsonsgisnet Posted December 4, 2006 Author Share #3 Posted December 4, 2006 Very funny. On that note, I have read of Leica's that trade, sealed in box, in Japan, and which have to be xrayed at transaction time to verify the contents. That is a strange world. Since there cannot be any early M8's still sealed, BUT, since there are only a handful of the early versions in existence and since they are all expected to be sent back for updating, then it becomes a game to hold one out. It could become the single one in existence ....
pascal_meheut Posted December 4, 2006 Share #4 Posted December 4, 2006 Already is. I'm selling mine for 20000€. The discount is because it is not sealed. I have however some proof that it was one of the very first to show banding and magenta cast
farnz Posted December 4, 2006 Share #5 Posted December 4, 2006 In that case, might photos showing magenta cast and/or other artifacts also become collectible? Sorta like a flawed penny black. Can hear the conversation from the year 2055 now: "Got a mint Guy Mancuso M8 magenta cushion dng on eBayPro for a song!" "No kidding!" "Hey I'll swap you for a Sean Reid M8 magenta wedding jpegs and a buncha RD-1 assorted magentas. "No deal. The Manusco dng's way too valuable!" Joseph S. Wisniewski Posted December 4, 2006 Share #10 Posted December 4, 2006 Is there any other Leica that comes with a battery in the box? That might have some effect on the value of a sealed box "collectible"... Picture a listing on eBay in 2016: "Leica M8 sealed, in box, oozing profusely" eeeeew! mr_big Posted December 4, 2006 Share #12 Posted December 4, 2006 You can bury it along with a Sharpie. Both will be worth a bundle in a thousand years.

Guest guy_mancuso Posted December 4, 2006 Share #15 Posted December 4, 2006 Yes i decided the way to go for me is 2 M8's and one Dmr for the specialized stuff, long lens, shift , macro an such. Just makes good sense for me. i do a lot of corporate work which includes events and the M's are perfect for it. Plus do all there maketing stuff. It's a win win for both of us. Soon all the issues will be cleared up and we can all get on to what we do best
Joseph S. Wisniewski Posted December 4, 2006 Share #16 Posted December 4, 2006 They all came with batteries in the box. This included the M and SLR. I should have been more specific. I don't know how much damage a button cell meant to power a light meter can do. I was more worried about the three ounces of potent caustics that make up an M8 battery. Ouch..people find the strangest ways to get an insult in. And if you're going to start collecting, you need the fireman and the boy with the parka. The wedding pictures were made with the 486 filters so they won't be so valuable.
ho_co Posted December 4, 2006 Share #18 Posted December 4, 2006 Re: collectibles-- You never know. There were fewer than 120 silver M5's imported to the US, but they haven't accrued value. There were very few MDa's made, but even many collectors have no idea what they are. You have your choice: Send it in for repair and use it; or box it up and start talking up its value. And keep your options open! --HC

No insult meant, Sean, it was intended to indicate future market value of a dng over a jpeg.
