Dirk Van der Herten Posted December 4, 2006 Share #1 Posted December 4, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) There are probably few places where fado, a bluesy type of Portuguese popular music, is sung in a better way than in Lisbon. They say that the essence of the fado is the quality of saudade, a word that does not readily translate into other languages. The difficulty stems from the fact that the word saudade expresses a range of emotions – loneliness, melancholy, longing, even a fatalistic view of loss. Although some can also be joyful songs. It is almost superfluous to mention that listening to good fados in good company during a nice dinner, can result in an unforgettable evening. Advertisement Posted December 4, 2006 Posted December 4, 2006 Hi Dirk Van der Herten, Take a look here Alfama Blues . I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
gverdon Posted December 4, 2006 Share #2 Posted December 4, 2006 Dirk, I especially like the first one: interesting angle, good expression, motion... I can hear what you saw and see what you heared. Next time, try to convince José to go in Coimbra for a different fado... Gérald P.-S. My thoughts to Noriko

jotam Posted December 4, 2006 Share #4 Posted December 4, 2006 Yes, Dirk! You did it! If I had to choose one, it would be nr.4. Is there more? I want to see more! :-) I think Gérald is right about Coimbra... Another kind of fado, though. Cheers, José
Dirk Van der Herten Posted December 4, 2006 Author Share #5 Posted December 4, 2006 Gérald, John and José, Thank you for looking and commenting. It was a fine night indeed, John, even with a moderate quantity of wine. The fado estudiante? Who knows we'd catch the examinations blues. OK, here are some more for you, José. Best, Dirk PS. I'll pass the message to Noriko, Gérald.

Dirk Van der Herten Posted December 6, 2006 Author Share #12 Posted December 6, 2006 There are so many fado places, what a remarkable coincidence. Indeed an authentic place one does not forget easily. Thank you for sharing your photos, Stefan, really interesting. Dirk
