stunsworth Posted December 13, 2009 Share #1 Posted December 13, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm currently experiencing a problem with Mac CS4 and certain filters. In particular when I try to use either the Liquify of Lens Corrections filter I get a spinning beach ball for around 20 seconds and then a Photoshop box pops up saying "A file system I/O error has occurred". I'm pretty sure this has only started to happen since I removed CS3 from my system using the uninstall tool - perhaps it removed a file shared with CS4? My question is how to I regain access to these filters? I've repaired disk permissions on the hard drive, but that hasn't solved my problem. Do I need to reinstall CS4 - I've already tried running the install program again, but that didn't solve the problem either. If I need to reinstall I'm guessing I'll need to de-install CS4 before re-installing it again. If so I have a couple of questions... Do I need to deactivate CS4 before removing it and them adding it back again? Remember it will be re-installed on the same computer. Following the reinstallation will I need to reload all my non-Adobe plugins such as Alien Skin Exposure, or will the newly installed version be clever enough to have picked them all up automatically? Thanks in advance, I hope that all made sense.

wattsy Posted December 13, 2009 Share #2 Posted December 13, 2009 Do I need to deactivate CS4 before removing it and them adding it back again? In my experience, no. I've done re-installations after having forgotten to deactivate and it's never been a problem after re-installing. However, I usually adopt a belt-and-braces approach and do de-activate first, even when my intention is to re-install onto the same computer. For what it's worth, I've usually found that a re-install does cure the kind of glitches that you describe (though I've never seen that particular one) but it is a pain having to do so. It might be the problem is outside of CS4. Have you checked your hard disc is okay (run verify via the disk utility)? Might also be worth a permissions repair (although I tend to think repairing permissions is best done more in hope than in expectation).

Might also be worth a permissions repair I'm pretty sure I checked the hard drive when this first started to happen - and I repaired permissions earlier today. No harm in doing another check though. stunsworth Posted December 13, 2009 Author Share #5 Posted December 13, 2009 Quick Google: Adobe Forums: Filters Won't Work in CS3 - Get "file... Ian, thanks. It's interesting that it was also the liquify filter that was having problems in that thread.
Guest WPalank Posted December 13, 2009 Share #6 Posted December 13, 2009 I know having a corrupt preference file can cause error messages. I'm not an expert on the matter, but if it comes down to a reinstall, you might try holding down shift + option + cmd (Mac) simultaneously while restarting Photoshop first. Then choose reset preferences.

stunsworth Posted December 13, 2009 Author Share #8 Posted December 13, 2009 Latest update. I checked the hard drive - no problems found I uninstalled CS4 using the Adobe uninstaller, re-installed CS4 (had to re-enter my serial number), and the problem is still there. I'll have to think about this.
wattsy Posted December 13, 2009 Share #9 Posted December 13, 2009 You might have to re-install OS X to get rid of this problem.
wlaidlaw Posted December 13, 2009 Share #10 Posted December 13, 2009 Steve, I was having all sorts of problems with CS3 a week ago when I was scanning in 12 slides at 4800 dpi at one time. This was on our server, which is a G5 dual 2.3 gHz Powermac. I found that I had two problems, as there was not enough RAM at 2GB, it was trying to spool in and out of the hard disc, which was screwing up the processing. I was getting all sorts of error messages. I bit the bullet and put in another 2GB of RAM and a faster HD (7200 1.5 TB Samsung). All now running smoothly. If you are having to deinstall + reinstall CS4, make sure you deactivate it. You will probably need to reinstall from a download. Make sure you select international English when you come to the first install screen, or your serial number will not produce a challenge code, You then phone up Adobe with your challenge code and they will give you an answer code. I could not get this to happen and it was because I was leaving the original language as English (US). I doubt if you need to reinstall your OS or you would be seeing problems in other programs. ceflynn Posted December 14, 2009 Share #11 Posted December 14, 2009 In my experience, applications do not report filesystem errors. You should check the system or console log, or the All Messages log in Leopard or Snow Leopard, to see if an i/o error is found there. The logs can be read using the Console application, in /Applications/Utilities. If i/o errors are found there, kudos to Adobe for reporting them to the user. If you have the TechTool Deluxe program that comes with AppleCare, or TechTool Pro, run the Surface Scan test overnight to check for bad blocks on the hard drive. stunsworth Posted December 16, 2009 Author Share #12 Posted December 16, 2009 I finally seem to have tracked down the cause of my problem. One of my external hard drives - that I mainly use as a 'scratch' area had a problem. Once that was repaired Photoshop worked without problem. The strange thing is that nothing in Photoshop actually uses that drive. Still, it's fixed so I'm happy.
ceflynn Posted December 16, 2009 Share #13 Posted December 16, 2009 Good to see that the problem is fixed. What was the nature of the problem, how did you detect it, and how was it solved?
stunsworth Posted December 17, 2009 Author Share #14 Posted December 17, 2009 I saved a Jpeg to the drive and when I tried to open it in Photoshop I was told that the file wasn't valid. I deleted the file, repaired the drive using the Mac Disc Utility and everything worked after that.
ceflynn Posted December 17, 2009 Share #15 Posted December 17, 2009 Thank you. The fact that Disk Utility was able to fix the error means that it was a disk directory error, a problem with the Catalog B-Tree, the Extents B-Tree (which Apple calls the Extents Overflow file) or the Volume Bitmap. Now can you please fix my Freecom 2TB Datatank RAID box, which stopped mounting yesterday (1 month out of warranty of course). I think it is down to having to unplug it without un-mounting, to release locked Finder, when I get the 10810 error with Finder locked and not able to force quit and reload since installing Snow Leopard. This is an issue which has been plaguing many Snow Leopard users and Apple still have no cure for it. It looks to be a Carbon/Cocoa coreservices conflict on certain machines (some of them on the day of purchase). I have many of my old DNG's on this box and as it was RAID, I thought I could always replace a hard disc with no loss but the whole housing seems to have died.
