Angelos Viskadourakis Posted December 15, 2009 Share #41 Posted December 15, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) the idea is to have totaly free zoom as is today and add the function of preset lenses(step zoom).-as an option. The most successful with film journalism and fashion and travelling photography was and still is -as a pocket alternative- Ricoh GR1v ,the best kept secret among professionals ,that camera has a fixed 28 mm lens with almost none distortion and can be AF but has the top snap mode where you can preselect the distance and move into action and get the shot with lighting speed, swiss watch accuracy and being discreet. I own Leica CM and Ricoh GR1v and DLUX4 was the closest match but having the zoom fishing all over the place and not having the ability to use a viewfinder for any other lens besides 24mm is not doing justice to an excellent minipro camera like DLUX4 ,pity:(:( I'm very afraid that Leica loved the idea and will use it in DLUX5 ,very sad. i find myself limited to either 24 or 60 just because is the only way to control the frame with discipline and accuracy and every time i touch the zoom i have no idea where it will stop ,what kind of frame i will get to compose in the next few splits of a second ,before the moment fly away for ever without being photographed and i will end with an accidental focal length with accidental composition and the moment is gone for ever.Pity & sad & it was so simple to add that extra function. That would had upgrade Dlux 4 into one more stop in photography history but didn't happen in that upgrade-Ricoh gx200 ,not sure-have it two years now and is in the same category of point & shoot cameras but unfortunately has not the IQ of our Leica. Advertisement Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 Hi Angelos Viskadourakis, Take a look here New firmware for DL4. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
discoscience Posted December 16, 2009 Share #42 Posted December 16, 2009 If the update had fixed focal lengths, you can bet there'd be people complaining that you couldn't freely zoom I don't think that would've been the case. Especially if Panasonic/Leica were to take a cue from the new Canon S90. The S90 gives you the ability to to toggle the zoom lens to fixed focal lengths via it's control ring (an ingenious little feature I must say). However even after toggling to a fixed focal length, you can still freely zoom in and out (it's essentially free-zooming with an optional complimentary step-zoom). This would've been so easy to add to the D-lux 4/LX3. They could've simply assigned a step zoom function to the "Fn" key or quick menu. Very disappointing. Looks like they'll save this for the d-lux 5.
elgenper Posted December 16, 2009 Share #43 Posted December 16, 2009 Well, I was one of those wishing for a step zoom mode: WOW! Works fine, so far. GREAT improvement!!! Thank you, Leica! (Hoping for a step zoom mode as well in the next update...) Now, after using the new FW for a week or so, I have to say I don´t really miss step zoom any more. When I´m using the camera in some situation, I start by selecting a suitable angle of view, not caring much what equivalent FL it happens to be. Then, whenever I turn on the camera again, I´m right where I was, and if I need to adjust it, I do so, again without really caring where I end up on the FL scale. I used to mark the lens barrel to be able to read FL:s off it, but I stopped doing that, too. But I´m aware that users of auxiliary viewfinders (I´m not using them) have good reasons to want it. burkey Posted December 16, 2009 Share #44 Posted December 16, 2009 ... a little experiment using EXIF data and a series of pictures taken at different zoom extensions which compared the location of the white zoom indicator bar to the: "1.64ft - 00(inf)" shown in the LCD while zooming. (The experimenter) used "P" mode and the digital zoom was turned off. Here are the results. If you set the white bar all the way to the left you (obviously) get 24mm. Under the "1" = 26mm. Under the "." = 28mm. Under the "6" = 32mm. Under the "4" = 37mm. Under the "f" = 41mm. Under the "t" 44mm. Under the "first empty space" = 48mm. Under the "hyphen" = 52mm. Under (actually a little to the left of) the "left infinity loop" = 57mm. And finally all the way to the right (again obviously) 60mm. Thanks. I had seen this before on the forum but wasn't able to find it by searching. I appreciate the help. . . . David

ppolla Posted December 18, 2009 Share #47 Posted December 18, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Not sure if you have seen a few threads on dpreview.com regarding the new firmware. There is a thought that this firmware actually made focusing less fast indoor, and increase the noise considerably.... I wonder if Leica is not waiting to fix that also.... If it was only French translation, that surely would have been fixed by now? No?

I wonder if Leica is not waiting to fix that also.... If it was only French translation, that surely would have been fixed by now? No? Not in my experience. My D-Lux 4 is focusing a lot faster now indoors or outdoors.

ppolla Posted December 18, 2009 Share #50 Posted December 18, 2009 new firmware has been pulled off the website due to what Leica claims the French language part of the firmware... Its been off the website for days....which tells me that it is not only the French translation that is the issue.... Apparently, new firmware will be available early next week. likealeica Posted December 18, 2009 Share #53 Posted December 18, 2009 Folks: I just checked a few minutes ago, and the firmware for the Dlux 4 is back up on the site. Downloaded it and installed, no problem. www.leica.com, which in my case, sent me automatically to the US site. Best wishes.
