glenerrolrd Posted December 12, 2009 Share #41 Posted December 12, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Chris I am in the same situation. I had the 135apo set up with a 28/90 mount and coded as the 135/2.8 ..worked great on the M8 ...but it took DAG three tries to get infinity focus . It sounds like you changed the mount back to the original cam which is the 35/135 on the M9 and you coded it? Or did you just have the cam modified ? Or I can stick with the 90mm frame same as it was on the M8? Interested in your POV having tried both ways. Roger I think this is the story. I had my 135 adapted for use with the M8 (so that it brought up the 90 framelines) and the coding for the 2.8 135 worked fine so there was a means of picking up the focal length in LR. For the M9 I have a mount which brings up the 135 framelines - so that's good news - but apart from manual selection I have no way of coding the lens to write the correct exif data. A marginal annoyance in the end - I know that it makes no difference to the image...
Advertisement Posted December 12, 2009 Posted December 12, 2009 Hi glenerrolrd, Take a look here Anyone use the 135mm APO-Telyt?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted December 12, 2009 Share #42 Posted December 12, 2009 I don't want to hijack the thread but also didn't know if this was worthy of a new one... How does the goggled 135/2.8 compare to the current apo-telyt? . A Hummer to a Ferrari. It is not a bad lens at all, but the Apo-Telyt is in a class of its own. The Tele-Elmar is the only lens that can approach its quality. In rangefinder lenses that is.
adan Posted December 12, 2009 Share #43 Posted December 12, 2009 Noah - the 135 f/2.8 has similar drawing to other contemporary Canada-designed pre-ASPH telephotos - the 90 f/2 M/R, the R 135 f/2.8 (same optics) and the 180 f/2.8s for the R. Moderate contrast and smooth bokeh wide-open - a lot of resolution but still gentle contrast stopped down a bit. Warmish greenish color compared to the Solms lenses. Occasionally the lower contrast can start to look muddy if shot alongside the modern ASPHs - but easy to boost contrast in post-processing. There were 3 optical versions of the M 135 f/2.8, (more if you count cosmetic changes) but on the whole their imagery is very similar - mostly a little cleanup in the corners at wider apertures in the newer design - if you call 1975 "newer" . The goggles can get out of alignment, fouling up the focusing. Be sure to test the exact lens you're planning to buy to make sure it works well. michael_b_elmer Posted December 12, 2009 Share #44 Posted December 12, 2009 Leica, please give us a 6 bit code for the 3.4/135 or, perhaps even better, let us have an improved version with goggles for the M9 (and perhaps f: 2.8). Woodies pictures demonstrate what a pity it is to be able to use this superb lens on the M9 only with manual coding and the 1.4 enlarger.
luigi bertolotti Posted December 12, 2009 Share #45 Posted December 12, 2009 Interesting but what is a jupiter 11....space craft ? 135 f4 in LTM - russian copy of Zeiss Tessar... my first tele for my Zorky 4K... an old dealer-photographer of my town sold me a used one, declaring proudly (in local dialect) "I used it a lot on my Leica !". Focused to 2,5 m... apart this, a more than honest 135... I do not remember why and when I sold it... ... probably to add value to my Zorky set... Woody Campbell Posted December 12, 2009 Share #46 Posted December 12, 2009 . . . How does the goggled 135/2.8 compare to the current apo-telyt? .... There are two versions of the goggled lens - the later is much better. Puts's book has the serial numbers - I can post if you're interested (I don't have the book with me now) - I have the second version. I've shot it side-by-side with the APO telyt and it is not in the same league (not even close). It was never very popular because it's really ungainly. The goggles do help focus because they have 1.4x (or so) magnification built into them. The copy I have made two trips to Don Goldberg to get infinity focus correct, and I'm still not happy with it. I've heard that to goggles can get out of alignment, complicating focus adjustment dramatically - there was probably a jig or a template at Leitz Canada (where it was manufactured) that no longer exists. I've got the usual dilemma about how to dispose of a piece of gear that I don't think is up to spec.
woodyspedden Posted December 12, 2009 Share #47 Posted December 12, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Here is a hand held shot with the M8 from 2007. A number of us went on a driving Safari and the trip was co-sponsored by Leica and Porsche. Lots of fun and met a cadre of really good shooters and even nicer people. The attached shot was at the Neuschwanstein castle in Frussen Germany. I was standing at the main parking lot looking upward at the castle from about 1000 meters away. The sun kept peeking through some strong clouds and I managed to catch this one just at a critical light moment. I had no problems achieving focus with the Apo Telyt on the M8 and I would suspect it is even easier on the M9. (I got stupid and sold the lens as I wasn't using it much.) I am looking for another at a reasonable price Best Woody Welcome, dear visitor! jaapv Posted December 13, 2009 Share #48 Posted December 13, 2009 I got stupid and sold the lens as I wasn't using it much. I am looking for another at a reasonable price Best Woody +1 This goes for a number of other Leica lenses I sold in the past as well:o The 135-2.8 is not amongst them though. I would not buy it again.
