Like most vultures this is a scavenger, feeding mostly from carcasses of animals which it finds by soaring from great heights over the savannah. Vultures are the "vaccum cleaners" of the savannah, they can strip the remains of a giraffe carcass to the bone within 2 or 3 days. These guys weigh on average about 7kg with a wing span of over 2meters.

 

Once again due to human encroachment and habitat destruction it is rarer than previously believed, its conservation status has been reassessed from Least Concern to Near Threatened.

Exquisite, which is exactly hwat I expect of your wildlife shots. On our first trip to Africa in '94 we were lucky enough to balloon over a white backed vulchure's nest with two chicks in it.
