Am confused....and need some help.

I currently own a 1Dmk3, and it is great for the sports photos I take...but aside from this camera I would like to purchase small compact camera that I can take with me anywhere I go.

Am torn between the Dlux4, LX3 and G11...

If Dlux 4 and LX 3 were not some 2 years old, I think decision would be easier...but I would have to buy one of these now, and 3 weeks later a new model would come out.

Any idea when the Dlux 4 upgrade is coming?

Should I wait?

Please let me know your ideas.

Thanks,

P

Welcome to the forum, ppolla!

The D-Lux 4 isn't 2 years old yet - the first ones appeared around October 2008. I don't know when - or if - a D-Lux 4 upgrade is coming out I just know how much I enjoy using mine and how it really surprises me from time to time.

My advice is to not worry too much about how 'old' the camera may be but to start using and enjoying it. After all, even if Leica did release a D-Lux 5 tomorrow, your D-Lux 4 would still be the fine camera it is today. It wouldn't be the sort of wallet shock of trading up to a 1Dmk4 either.

Pete.

D-lux 4 and LX3 are restyled versions of each other (twins), you probably know that. The LX3 has a better accessory leather case and a cheaper (but still expensive, but briliant and less massive/garish) optional optical viewfinder than the Leica.

I'm not sure that the LX3's successor is going to be a collaboration with Leica, so the LX3/Dlux 4 may be an end of an era. I can see your point about not buying a camera new when hanging on a while may well see a glut of the product, in "mint condition", on ebay at inevitably low prices if a rumoured LX4 (5) is announced. It's a toughy but I imagine a lot more LX3's on ebay than D-lux 4's as people will undoubtably feel more incined to keep hold of an "old model" Leica than a pansonic.

So the LX3's a better option from a utlitarian POV, but the Leica's better looking and more likely to hold it's status and affection. Too difficult to call - but to nail my colours to the mast - I'd buy a new LX3, the leather case and the OVF for the same money as the Leica is on it's own.

I read your post...you were not too late. I got a good price at the duty free airport and the difference was not huge...

So I went for history and whole Leica experience rather than cheaper Panasonic.

Yes, my first Leica....and hopefully not the last. I would love to get my hands on the M9....but for that I need to sell my Canon camera and lots of L glass....as it is just sitting in the attic and collecting dust (in my camera bag)....

You made the best choice in light of the fact that there may well be a load of LX3's on ebay as the crowds rush to keep up with model replacement. The Leica is what it is, and that's what so great about the brand, they've managed to associate a timeless aura with some of their digital products to their owners, even though they are esssentially the same as twin products that almost seem dispensible with their respective owners.

I'd have to sell a lot more tha my possessions to afford an M9 and some decent lenses. Not to put too fine a point on it - I'd be working a lot of nights, and not at a factory.
