M9 - Memory Card Performance

Hello Everyone,

I just took delivery of my M9 Gray. It was ordered on 9/9 and delivered on 12/1. Anyway I wanted to purchase new memory cards 8GB or 16GB to accommodate the larger file size of each photo compared to the M8.2.

I was all set to purchase the fastest Memory card from Sandisk (Extreme Series) until I ran into official Leica PDF (Link Below) explaining the expected performance rating of the various tested cards.

Can someone explain to me why a SanDisk Ultra 2 would perform better then a Extreme on a M9? The Ultra has a 16mbs speed and the extreme has a 30mb/s speed. Logic would say that the extreme would be better but not according to our good friends at Leica.

Because of sub-optimized software in the M9. I think we can reasonably trust that it will be addressed in due course. In the meantime, enjoy the "benefit" that a much cheaper card is the top performer in your new M9.

Congrats on the new camera!

When I read comments like the above I'm seriously starting to wonder about the mental health situation of some Leica fans here. Leica apparently gets away with asking a similar top amount of money as Canon or Nikon do for their top pro offerings, yet the camera in question is as half cooked as the M8 was at its introduction.

If Canon or Nikon would pull such a crap people here wouldn't hesitate to bitch about it. Yet with Leica, nobody minds to be a happily paying guinea pig.

I really do like Leica but this behaviour ... I just don't understand.

Well, I'm not suggesting that the oddity where the M9 has sub-optimized SD card performance is a good thing. But in the larger scheme, it is a VERY minor deal. The major constraint on file writes in the M9 is the image processor in the camera, not card type.

I'd far rather have that to deal with than the periodic lock-ups that occasion when using my D3.

Beyond that, I'd simply suggest that people who expect utter perfection in highly complex digital products like the M9, the D3, Lightroom, Photoshop, or the laptop computers that most of us use... are doomed to eternal disappointment.

That's the kind of blind-sided answer I expected. (ans a dumb one to boot)

Jeff has simply expressed his view, whether you agree with it or not. Is it necessary to insult the man?

I'm amazed at how quickly a simple thread on Sd cards can degenerate to this! I suppose some people believe that the anonymity that the internet affords them, also gives them license to insult others.

Oh yeah, you need to get your head out of the clouds.

Its possible to time Canon's first software upgrade for all their cameras. Its usually about six weeks after people start bitching on DPR. Which sort of implies Canon a) don't already know about any problems users start to encounter, or B) don't care, they just want the camera on the market.

In hindsight, I agree with you.

My apologies to Jeff.

Over the last while it has become my impression that this forum has slowly been taking over by fanboys with a huge Leica dot on their forehead. Guess, I got more annoyed by this trend than I realized. Not long ago I truly enjoyed this forum which is now nothing more than a joke. Guess, it's time for me to go.

Again, my apologies to Jeff.

I do partly agree with haribo. People do seem to accept sometimes quite serious defects with their Leica kit here that they would not tolerate with other brands.

The only sensible explanation I can give is that Leica cameras are so exceptional in other areas that the trade-off is worth it.
