But if you going to buy them as collectible, as long you get their first scratch on them, their value drops a few hundred. I bought my Anthracite new - spanking new and used a few times - have the odd scratch here and there. I plan to pass it on to my kid and that's how collectible it is for me - its a special version and I love it but I dont worry as resale. I believe the Hammertone are more resistant to that. Aside:I'm aware the MP6's are prone to brassing. But somehow, to me, brassing on black looks ok. Photografica in Copenhagen has one in stock for not much more than a regular MP + Leicavit + 35 'cron. Of course, it's not much more expensive than a regular MP bought in DENMARK. If you're buying from outside of Denmark, the Danish price of the hammertone may be a bit pricy, but it's up to you to decide. I shoot film, and my MP has increased in value since I purchased it in 2003, but at today's prices I'm not sure how much appreciation is left. Much of the appreciation for used mechanical Ms is because Leica keeps raising the price on new products. In 2003 the list on an MP was a whopping $2595. Now it is $4395, and that will go up in January. It can't keep going up, because people who shoot analog are limited, and because of the competition from the used market. I'm not sure whether the value of Ms will fall off a cliff, like Leica SLRs, and I know nothing about the asian market (I'm told that most film Ms these days are being sold in asia), but it's not an expanding market. Of that I'm sure. At some point I think we start seeing depreciation of analog Leica M bodies. The lenses should retain their value, because of the M9. But not all "collectibles" seem to appreciate. Theanthracite kit being a case in point. Given that several anthracite MP + Leicavit kits have been floating around on the UK used market in recent months (usually ex-demo models as far as it's possible to tell) at prices barely above a standard new 0.72 MP, this suggests that some ofthe most recent special editions have not held their price especially well and have certainly not appreciated in value. My guess is that we will continue to see these kinds of fluctuations but with an overall downward trend. The exception being especially sought after collectible/limited editions, which seem somewhat exempt from devaluation because never (or rarely) purchased by people who are looking for user cameras. But as the OP asked which offers the best investment potential and resale price, I'd have to say if you want to *invest* then do it in something other than analogue cameras... I must say I'm somewhat surprised at the general recommendation of staying away in investing in analogue cameras. I've been trying to use the same analogy of watches with cameras (i.e. personally I believe in investment in manual or automatic watches vs. expensive "quartz" watches) but maybe I can't compare the two? At the rate technology has been advancing, personally I'm somewhat apprehensive in "heavy investment" digital cameras (despite of how much I want a Leica M9 ) as such my original post. So if I shouldn't invest in analogue cameras and I don't really believe in investing in digital cameras, that leaves investment in lenses only.
