D-Lux 3 vs D-Lux 4

I have a D-Lux 4 and my friend a D-Lux 3 and I have to say that the D-Lux 4 blows the D-Lux 3 away on every account.

The only thing the D-Lux 4 does not win over the D-Lux 3 is it's zoom. But the 24mm f2 lens of the D-Lux 4 is quite amazing and makes up for its lack of telephoto zoom.

You should be able to pick up a D-Lux 4 second hand for about £400 - £450, especially now the X1 is about to be launched ;o)

The D3 has its weaknesses. If you find your way around them, it's a monster.

It's weakness is light. There can never be too much.

Having said that -if you can set up shots tailored to the machine- it will perform for you.

I have printed with insane colour and sharpness 13X19 with the D3.

Forget the box. Make an image. We've all seen some pretty terrible photographs taken with better cameras.

I found a used dlux 3 around $400 and I'm wondering whether I should get dlux 4 for a bit more.

can anyone tell me what the biggest difference is?

D-Lux 4:

1. Close focus down to 1 cm for macro.

2. Wider angle lens 24 mm (DL4) v 28 mm (DL3)

3. Shorter telephoto setting 60 mm (DL4) v 112 mm (DL3)

4. Faster zoom lens f/2.0-2.8 (DL4) v f/2.8-4.9 (DL3)

5. Multiple preset 'film' modes including 3 black and white modes

6. Dimensions: 109x56x27 (DL4) v 106x56x26 (DL3).

7. Weight: 248g (DL4) v 220g (DL3)

8. Filter ring to use polarising filters etc or ultra wide angle lens

9. Hot shoe for mounting external viewfinder

10. Larger LCD

11. High definition (HD) video capture

12. Proprietary raw file format only readable by some raw developers

13. Quick menu access through joystick

14. Additional internal photo memory: 50 MB (DL4) v 13 MB (DL3)

15. More expensive.

Obviously the above doesn't tell the whole story but I went from a D-Lux 2, which is very similar to the D-Lux 3, to the D-Lux 4 and imho it's a far more versatile camera particularly because of the faster lens, creative film mode presets and the close focus performance but I do miss the extra telephoto reach of the earlier models.

Pete.
