wetworx Posted December 3, 2009 Share #1 Posted December 3, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) I plan to attach the Leica R 100mm Macro to my digital Canon via adapter. I'd like to be able to decrease the minimum focusing distance (by default 0.45m), and wanted to hear suggestions as to what I should do...extenders? make/model? close-up lens? Elpro? Thanks. Advertisement Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 Hi wetworx, Take a look here Macro R 100mm f/2.8 w/ Canon. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
farnz Posted December 4, 2009 Share #2 Posted December 4, 2009 I use this lens on a 5D MkII with a CameraQuest adaptor and it produces outstanding results, assisted by nailing focus with Live View and its on-screen magnification facility. Leica produced a special Elpro 1:2 - 1:1 for the 100/2.8 APO-Macro-Elmarit-R but it doesn't appear to focus much closer than 45 cm although it will increase the reproduction ratio, of course, which will produce a similar effect. I've found that even at f/16 the Elpro has a fairly rigid object to lens distance of approximately 1 index finger length. I don't have the 2x APO extender so I can't help with close focus on that and none of the literature I have covers it but I think it's unlikely to be closer than the lens on its own. Pete. wetworx Posted December 4, 2009 Author Share #3 Posted December 4, 2009 yeah, I was curious about that. I guess the Elpro is the way to go...I'll look into both extenders from canon and leica...but I'll probably save the money for now. Thank you! Is there any reason that you need a specific focusing distance, as distinct from a specific magnification ratio. Generally, for a given magnification, most would agree that the bigger the distance, that is to say, the longer the focal length, the better (simply for operational convenience). The specific dedicated Elpro is definitely the way to go with this lens. The well known Scottish dealer (being a bit McBethian so as not to advertise too specifically) has a second hand one for £195. dkCambridgeshire Posted January 10, 2010 Share #5 Posted January 10, 2010 And another well known UK dealer who has risen, Phoenix like, from ashes at least twice and with a resurrected trading name has for sale the very scarce STA-1 tripod collar for this lens. Grab it quick before someone else spots it. Happy New Year dunk

I haven't and the reports I've read tended to regard it as cheap, plastic, and not very effective. Are they unfounded? Pete.
masjah Posted January 10, 2010 Share #7 Posted January 10, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Here's an example of an image taken with the 100/2.8 R plus its own Elpro. The eye of the needle is about 1.5mm long. Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! dkCambridgeshire Posted January 10, 2010 Share #8 Posted January 10, 2010 Dunk, Do you have personal experience of the STA-1? I haven't and the reports I've read tended to regard it as cheap, plastic, and not very effective. Are they unfounded? Pete. I find it it makes a better balanced combination ... but yes it is 'plastic' or polycarbonate. However, when I used it with a Canon 200mm macro lens on a T90 after losing the Canon lens' tripod collar, the STA-1's construction certainly proved to be very strong and ergonomic. Cheers dunk
pgk Posted January 10, 2010 Share #9 Posted January 10, 2010 Although I realise that this is the Leica forum, can I just say that Canon's 100/2.8 macro is IMHO one of their best lenses and is superb at infinity as well as close up. It operates down to 1:1 but is an IF lens so is not wondrous if used with extension tubes etc. I use this Canon lens a great deal and given its price wonder whether adapting a Leica R macro - superb though that lens is also - is really worthwhile unless of course that you already own one. I've used my lens on the 5D2 and IMHO it is one of the few lenses capable of working really well with this camera.
farnz Posted January 10, 2010 Share #10 Posted January 10, 2010 Thanks, Dunk. As long as it does it's job is what's important. I wondered if the reports I alluded to were a touch snooty and I think you've answered that for me. Pete.
tobey bilek Posted January 11, 2010 Share #11 Posted January 11, 2010 I use the proper ELpro and it works great. The design of the lens is complicated and tubes will get you closer, they don`t always work in practice. The down side to the Elpro is the cost.
