andybarton Posted December 2, 2006 Share #1 Posted December 2, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Sorry, but I had to share this! Here we are in Birkenhead Park. The first ever public municipal park in the world, and the model for Central Park in New York. In the last couple of years, £11m has been spent on refurbishing it. In general, they have done a great job. However... Someone thought that it would be a good idea to put a CCTV camera, right in front of the lake and the pavilion. Genius. CCTV cameras are a reasonable enough idea, in public parks these days, but...

elansprint72 Posted December 2, 2006 Share #3 Posted December 2, 2006 That would have been a lovely composition without the pole, I don't think they could have put it in a worse place, so close to the water's edge. Cheers, Pete.

andybarton Posted December 4, 2006 Author Share #7 Posted December 4, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) John The average person in Britain is seen on CCTV 300+ times, every day of their life. "They" are now talking about having CCTV cameras with microphones, so they can hear what you're doing, as well as watch you. All in the name of "security", apparently. As if terrorists are going to stand around on street corners hatching their plots...

stunsworth Posted December 4, 2006 Share #9 Posted December 4, 2006 Andy, the cameras don't solve the problem, they just move it. You can see this in the town where I live. Whereas before teenagers used to gather on the main street, now they go round the corner where the cameras can't see them - not that I'm suggesting that they're up to mischief. Wait until the road pricing suggestion is implemented, then the authorities will be able to see exactly where most of us are most of the time. As if terrorists are going to stand around on street corners hatching their plots.. yeah right. But this just simply adds to it, then George Orwwll was more of a Prophet than a writer of fiction. Why don't they stop pussyfotting around, implement Marshal Law, suspend the Constitution and have Tony become the new "Supreme Leader".... and arrest anyone who smiles at the cctv cameras:D
fonziewonzie Posted December 5, 2006 Share #11 Posted December 5, 2006 Just a different perspective on things... as a person who lived in Britain and in London for several years, I can honestly tell you that myself and most people who live there agree that CCTV cameras add enormously to general security around big cities, London especially. You have no idea how much they help in solving crimes like abductions, assaults, rapes, robberies and any other thing you could possibly think of. It's actually suprising to me how people seem reluctant to have them here in cities like in Oakland where the crime rate is staggering for a city of its size. (as for the photo in question, at least they are usually more discrete in where they place CCTV cameras in London) .: a

ECliffordSmith Posted December 6, 2006 Share #13 Posted December 6, 2006 Andy, A very worthwhile question! I can only assume the decision was made on a map with no consideration of the actual physical location. Great light and composition though! I really like the reflections. Bojan Mmmm...can't argue that one Bojan and Albert. What a pity to put a pole in that position Andy. It wastes the charming view. Nice-looking park at any rate. Thanks. A pity I don't recall the origin of this quote: "Those who would sacrifice liberty for security deserve neither". I could get rid of the 1984 look with a chainsaw... I think that the quote was from either Tony Blair, or our Home Secretary. The one who thinks that ID Cards are the solution to all of our problems.
