lct Posted December 2, 2006 Share #21  Posted December 2, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) ...Were there ever any firmware updates made available for the D1?.. Not officially but i suspect that the Digilux 1 has got some kind of firmware update around July 2003. I own 2 copies of it and the later shows less digital noise obviously. I'd suggest that you choose the version with PSE 2.0 and a 256MB card in the package if you can (serial number # 2812xxx or later probably).  ...I found the operating manual for the DMC-LC5 online; will that cover all essentials on the D1 as well?.. The D1 manual can be downloaded here: http://tinyurl.com/rv7w/LeicaD1_Manual.pdf  ...What's the D1 size limit for SD cards? 4GB?.. Never tried 4GB SD cards so far. 2GB's seem to work well but i've never filled mines up on the D1. Given the rather small size of jpeg files, i prefer using 256MB, 512MB or 1GB cards. Advertisement Posted December 2, 2006 Posted December 2, 2006 Hi lct, Take a look here Digilux 1. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
alukban Posted December 2, 2006 Share #22  Posted December 2, 2006 I'll be hanging on to the D1 for my wife (and future kid) because it is simpler than the DL3 when I have the lens hood on it. At parties, I tell her to leave the power switch on and just touch the exposure button to wake it up and never touch another a button. I don't even let her turn on the LCD display  The DL3 "looks like" the old Leicas. I would love to find a shoe-mounted optical vewifinder and adapt one to it via some aluminum bracketing screwed on from the bottom tripod mount. Hmmmm... "watch this space". robert_parker Posted December 3, 2006 Share #23  Posted December 3, 2006 Thomas  In answer to your question to me - I almost always took jpegs with my D1 when I had it. Probably now, I'd try for more TIFFs, on the basis that IMHO the image quality was noticably better (and I've got bigger SD cards !!)

What's the delay between TIFFs with a fast card such as the SanDisk Extreme III or similar, do you know?
lct Posted December 3, 2006 Share #26 Â Posted December 3, 2006 ...my main concern with D1 vs DL3 is dynamic range where the D1 looks outdated in comparison; many blown highlights and shadows/shadow detail are suffering in the pics I see on the net..Did you mostly shoot TIFF?... I haven't noticed huge differences between the D1 and my later digicams (R-D1, D70) as far as DR is concerned but the shadows are more noisy certainly. Tiff gives the best overall results but it takes about 6 seconds to print on the card so i use jpeg fine mostly. I have not tried the DL3 so far as i don't like sans VF digicams but i have printed a couple of pics out of it and they look very nice indeed. With a good optical viewfinder, i would probably choose it to replace the D1 if it were as fast as the latter.
thomasl.se Posted December 3, 2006 Author Share #27 Â Posted December 3, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) 6 seconds, is that with the fastest currently available SD? thomasl.se Posted December 4, 2006 Author Share #29 Â Posted December 4, 2006 Monday, so I just talked to my local Panasonic service rep about the LC1, and I feel a bit better about getting one now. According to them, most of the reparations are on the LCD due to drops and rough handling. Sensor failure is quite rare, he said. Â Today an LC1 went for $768. D2's fetch app $1300-1400. Â If I don't see an LC1 available from within Eurozone, I'll grab one of the D1's. I view the DL3 as a handy and reliable backup alernative; no more no less, good looks aside. D1 pics got soul, the three dimensional.Leica signature.
lct Posted December 4, 2006 Share #30 Â Posted December 4, 2006 Last one i tried was a 2GB Transcend 150x if i remember well.I'm not at home here but i'll check when i come back. Just checked: between 6 and 7 seconds to print one 10.7MB Tiff together with one 860KB jpeg on Transcend 150x (2 GB), Sandisk Extreme III (1GB) and Sandisk Ultra II (1GB & 256MB) SD cards. But about 17 seconds on the Leica card (256MB) sold with the D1.

lct Posted December 4, 2006 Share #32 Â Posted December 4, 2006 Not everyone can show a red dot on their memory cards... Serioulsy i had to format the card twice to make sure but yes my 256MB Leica card takes 17 sec to do the job. Remember it's been sold 3 years ago though.
