Good day all,

Just a quick report on my "new to me M8" from B&H's Used Department. The package arrived on time, overnight ($80 USD) and here is a short bullet point report:

- the camera was in the same bag with the charger, also a couple of cables and banging against each other

- the camera was dirty, dusty, etc.

- the sensor was dirty, the first picture I took the sky came in looking like it had a contagious disease

- spent $70 to get the sensor cleaned and it's still not 100% okay, although much better.

- the date and time are stuck, not moving by even one second

The only good thing is the camera has less than 1500 actuations...but I am sending it back and replacing with a new 8.2 or maybe even a 9. Also, I called B&H and they were very professional and apologized for the state of the camera, I am sure they will do okay in replacing.

All in all a great camera, I love it and now just need to get one that works.

Happy Thanksgiving all!

Although I purchase a great deal from BH Photo (new equipment), my only 2 used camera body purchases were a disappointment. Stan Tamarkin on the other hand has been very positive. Popflash photo is another that I could highly recommend.

Cheers.

If it was in such a poor state, why did you waste $70 on having the sensor cleaned?

I think there are times when we'd all rather keep something rather than have to send it back. Sometimes after a period of reflection we decide that it's best for it to be returned.

I agree with Peter P in reference to Stan Tamarkin. Over the past couple of decades I have purchased new and used equipment from Tamarkin's stores and never considered returning an item. Goods are packed professionally, priced fairly, described accurately and shipped promptly. What more could you expect? Happy T day to all, ron:)

I didn't send it back because I wanted to avoid being without a camera until B&H was checking this one and also because $70 is not that bad to spend on getting it cleaned. Anyway, hope I won't have an issue in trying to exchange it for a new 8.2, or an M9...debating on the should I save $1000 or not...

buyer beware or seems like you just changed your mind?...either way it's okie but better decide now cos an m9 you will go on a waitlist til apr/may next year, an m8.2 you can probably have now. if an m8.2, take a cursory look round first because there might be some very good condition second hand units available:D

i have an m8.2, it's a wonderful camera..

last year i bought a fogg b-laika bag online from tamarkin cameras, since i live in asia. i guess tamarkin wasn't the cheapest but it was the quickest option for getting it before a trip. it arrived promptly in well packed but also unfortunately well used condition. since i usually chuck a new bag directly into the washing machine anyway and stamp around on it for a bit before use, i didn't make a fuss about it but i was a little taken aback at the time..can't complain now, the "lived-in look" looks great

Well, it's mostly my feedback on B&H's Used Dept. I was not expecting perfection from a used camera with 8+ rating but I was expecting it to have all functions working well. Now the fact that it has spots, dirt and that it had to be cleaned...no problem. But as always, every time I try to save some money I end up paying more than retail for the new item...overnight shipping charges, cleaning...so maybe one day I will learn to just buy new :)

I very much look forward to getting my brand new M8.2 next week. My one lens is very lonely right now...

Have a great weekend!

My vote on purchasing anything Leica is for Stan Tamarkin! He's not just a Leica dealers, he's a Leica user and a gentlemen.

How on earth did you manage to spend 70 USD on a sensor clean?? Somebody is getting rich on what is basically a five minute DIY job.

I paid $70 AUS (in Sydney) on the weekend for a senor clean (including removing a sensor smear) and internal chamber de-dusting/clean.

Very very pleased with the result. Sensor is spotless..... Money well spent....

Hey, for 70 dollars you guys should start sending your cameras to me. I figure I can make well over 700 bucks an hour that way! Man, that is really stealing sugar from a baby-s mouth....

I guess I should've mentioned the fact that in order to avoid having any issues with returning the camera I wanted to have the sensor cleaned by an authorized Leica dealer...just in case. Stupid? Maybe...but so is the camera insurance you buy and never use. So it was a "peace of mind" approach since I was almost 100% sure I would return the camera.

And the guy mentioned that they charge this much to avoid having to clean sensors all day, kinda discourages people to go back for another cleaning.

Hope this clarifies the sensor cleaning price issue. In unrelated news, hoping to get the 8.2 by end of this week.

did you get your 8.2 yet? any issues? it's a wise choice for your peace of mind and i hope you didn't lose too much cash on the exchange issues. at least your lens won't be lonely now:) enjoy your camera!

The new 8.2 is going to be delivered Saturday morning since I am traveling all week and B&H doesn't ship stuff to hotels. So, just 2 more days and hopefully I will be in my little slice of Leica heaven. Keeping my fingers crossed that this camera will be okay.

To be continued...
