My camera will not be available for me until the last part of January or February, 2007. Has the final decision been made my Leica as to the method to "fix" the problem, and, if so, is the fix the use of IR filters? Or, is the filter solution a short term fix only. Yes, the fix for the M8 is to use IR filters, at least when you shoot color. If we see a sensor change to do all the IR filtering internally, it will come in a later model at some unknown future date. Since you are planning to pick up your M8 next year, check with your dealer to see if the two free Leica-supplied filters require you to have at least paid a deposit by Dec 31, 2006. And wait until next year to look for the three filters that you need, since there may be some recommendation from Leica and availability will be easier then. scott Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
grober Posted November 30, 2006 Share #4 Posted November 30, 2006 Having coffee with another M8 owner this morning taught me a lot. (He's a lot more computer savey than yours truly.) Even after Solms applies their magic to the first wave of M8s that will be returned to them sometime in December (or later), you'll always need to wear the approrpiate IR cut filter on whatever lens or lenses you elect to use on the M8. Since the white balance has been so unreliable, I have taken to shooting a bit of B&W with my M8. On closer examination today, even my B&W shots show signs of IR pollution. I'll need to use the two filters Leica promises to give me and scrounge around for the other four that I'll also need. The filters are part of the cure and will need to be used on both B&W and color whenever the M8 is used.. Oh well... -g Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

That would seem an unnecessary waste of resources since many who buy new M lenses will use them with film bodies. I think Leica will have trouble enough just supplying filters for the M8 purchasers. jrc Posted November 30, 2006 Share #7 Posted November 30, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) We're probably only talking about a few thousand filters -- there were estimates on this site that probably no more than ~1500 or so "early Leicas" were shipped. Whether this is correct, I don't know. If it's more-or-less accurate, then Leica will only have to come up with ~3,000 filters. If the filters cost Leica $50 each, that'd only be $150,000 total, offset by the fact that people will be buying more filters either from Leica, or Leica dealers, at full price... Oh well... -g I think this is unreasonably rigid... but I guess you mean "you'll always need the appropriate IR cut filter" in a JPEG workflow. In RAW, WB isn't an issue, and most, if not all, of the IR shift problems can be easily solved. Having said that shooting with a filter will certainly help. marknorton Posted December 1, 2006 Share #10 Posted December 1, 2006 Jamie: while I accept that bad WB can be fixed in C1, I still think the LCD display should show a reasonably accurate rendition of the image. In artificial light, it's way off. Also, if reliable WB is never reliable, it will rule out using JPEG with RAW backup which will kill the camera for those who don't want to mess around on a computer to fix it. frc Posted December 1, 2006 Share #11 Posted December 1, 2006 There is a conspiracy, no I'm not being paranoid, of dust-particles. They notify all the others of my slide-scanning. Alas. Friends I still have, the healing-brush is one of them. The particles are now laughing at me. I told them about my plan of purchase. The M8. No more time-consuming post-production. But the diabolic particles are still laughing. Colour-corrections, green blobs, magenta banding, ghost-images because of mandatory IR-filters oh dear. I looked at the MP, never noticed before, it gives me a smile. I love the look of film but for speed of work, Leica do me a favour. Fix these issues, fix'm well. Fr.
