Hi,

I am new to the forum, and in August purchased a used M8 along with a 28 mm Elmarit-M 4th version and a 6-bit coded 50 mm Summicron-M (both used). Having used Nikon SLRs and rangefinders since 1972 (I am 50 this year); with my latest a D700, I see why the M8 is an excellent candid photographer's tool. I am able to walk around neighborhoods in the city of Chicago and take street scenes without drawing much attention.

My M8 shutter has about 6k clicks. I didn't see in the camera manual or in this forum any information on when to have the camera sent in for routine maintenance. I suppose it depends on number of actuations per year, along with other factors - shock, moisture, etc.

Are there guidelines that I should follow? The camera will be well taken care of.

Thanks in advance.

Brian :)

I do not have an exact number but I suspect that my M8 has gotten approx 10,000 actuations on it in 2.5 years. I recently found a small 'mark' on one of the shutter blades so I sent the camera out to Leica USA for their inspection and possible repair (the estimate letter says "Replace shutter with warranty unit". My camera is out of warranty, though).

It might be a good routine practice to check the shutter blades when you clean the CCD.

Sleep well and have fun shooting with your M8!

cheers

If it is written like that it is quite possible that this is a repair under guarantee nevertheless. I would check it out if I were you.

THanks jaapv. Yes, I am trying to ask them what that really means but thier phone line has been jammed all this morning for some reason.

I wonder why the shutter is still covered by warranty while they are asking 1250USD to replace the CCD that shows the infamous fine-line defect (I am asking to look into two issues in one sitting).

cheers
