Here's one from yesterday. I love this lens on the M9.

Thank you Rob.

Really nice shot, it shows what I suspect I liked of this lens, i.e. its "classic" bokeh.

thank you

(share more if you want!).

Thanks! Here's another!

Best,

Ron

The $64,000 question: is there a focus-shift issue with this lens? (Edit: I see Sean Reid found there was when I checked at his site. Pity. Wait a mo' - it emulates the pre-ASPH 35 'lux? Interest back again!)

I used to have the CV 35/1.2 but found it a little soft and lacking in contrast (not to mention big and heavy). Does the 35/1.4 MC do better in the contrast department?

Both shots look lovely! For some reason, I thought that this lens had a bad reputation. But these shots indicate it's a very good lens. Ron, do you happen to remember the approximate f-stop for these shots? — it's not terribly important, but may be helpful in getting a feel for the bokeh one could expect at a certain f-stop at about this subject distance. And by the way, is that the SC or MC version (would the difference be apparent in these shots)?

It has a bad rep for the bokeh shown in the top of the first picture shown (which is a lovely photo by the way). I think people are over reacting in this case - it appears to be a great lens at a great price. It does have some barrel distortion from what I've heard though.

zlatkob & zlatkob,

Its a lovely lens with a very nice "look". I have used it since it came out on film, M8 and now M9.

Some people don't like how it handles the highlight defocused, the biggest issue is probably the back-focus, however it is very slight, and is less of a issue on the M9 than on the M8. basically use the lens wide open or stop down to 4.0 or 5.6, at 2 and 2.8 you are likely to notice the backfocus.

They are both near wide open. Not fully, but close. Just the way I shoot. Also, I have found the bokeh to be really pleasant, most of the time. Here's a wide open shot in very low light.

Ron

This is wide open with a pretty tough background. It is very sharp and I think it's done well with bokeh here.

I promise this is the last example! This is not the photo forum after all!

Yes- I have the MC one...

but No m9 to try it on... still waiting for that...

I will post some images when the m9 arrives. But the lens looks very nice to me- smooth focus and quality construction. Love the size, and nice metal hood- I wish I could try it out...

As a user of the Leitz 35 f/1.4 pre-ASPH, I'll say the C/V looks pretty good, too. The bokeh is a bit "explosive" in the trees in that first cuddling couple shot, but I'm not sure my lens would do much different. Pretty much what one gets from a double-gauss 35 @ f/1.4 (or for that matter, the 35 f/2 pre-ASPH I used to have).

What's the minimum focus on the C/V version?

Everybody know I love this lens - but it is the lens I "love to hate" at 1.4 it have a wonderful creamy rendering, it is not clinically sharp at 1.4.

At 1m, a typical portrait distance, the problem with the lens is that while the focus is on the spot at 1.4. already at 2.0 it have moved about 1.5 inches behind where I focused and at 4.0 it is closer to 3-4 inches behind, not until 5.6 do I again have acceptable focus on the chosen focus point and at that time the main focus is at least 4 inches behind the chosen spot, at this point the background is also catching up quickly. this means that the ONLY place where my copy of this lens is reasonable accurate is at 1.4 - this is no big deal on landscape, but in the 2-3m range this can mean everything.

Basically my lens is 1.4 and 5.6 and down only. I know there are some perfect examples of this lens out there... but there are at least as many or more pretty temperamental versions. I would still recommend the lens but only to a user who understand the limitations.

As I said, this is the lens I love to hate, it have been involved in so many great shots, and it have ruined enough frames that I have a healthy respect for its dark side.
