atlfoto Posted November 11, 2009 Share #1 Posted November 11, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, I need some help with my M6. I'm getting negatives with strange vertical stripes on them, like if some little light is getting inside the camera by the rear door. I need something very simple. If you take your Leica M (preferably M6) and being fully closed you press it slightly in the back door, just under the ISOs wheel, is there any slack, ie perceive it as if the door can move very slightly inward? Thank you for your response.
Advertisement Posted November 11, 2009 Posted November 11, 2009 Hi atlfoto, Take a look here HELP - Light inside M6 by the rear door. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
MattLain Posted November 11, 2009 Share #2 Posted November 11, 2009 mines an M4-P, there is slack when pushing on the back door. I do seem to have a form of lightleak, but not the same of yours, I get a horizontal quarter-crescent shape of light at the top of the frame only sometimes once on a single roll of 36. The door seems light proof enough to me though...
tobey bilek Posted November 11, 2009 Share #3 Posted November 11, 2009 To find a light leak Take lens off camera. put shutter on B. Go into a nearly dark room. release an hold shutter. Shine a keychain or snall penlight around the back door while looking thru the lens mount. Remove bottom and shine light all openings on the top and strap attachment points. Work over a blanket or cushion so if you drop the camera in the dark!! If the light is on an edge of a frame, the second shutter curtain may be bouncing open. If not on an edge, this is not the problem. If you think you isolate the leak, tape black tape over the leak and shoot a cheap roll of 400 speed in bright sun. More than likely no matter what, you need a pro repair.
rob_x2004 Posted November 11, 2009 Share #4 Posted November 11, 2009 Atlfoto, can you post an image. The only vertical stipe leak I know about does not come from the back door.
JBA Posted November 12, 2009 Share #5 Posted November 12, 2009 My M6 (recently sold) had a horizontal band light leak due to a loose backdoor problem. It took my local repair shop two tries to fix it. It ended up bing a somewhat loose or slightly bent hinge.
earleygallery Posted November 12, 2009 Share #6 Posted November 12, 2009 It's almost certainly NOT the rear hinged door. Please post an image showing the fault (ideally scan the whole negative not just the frame). It's more likely to be a problem with the shutter or a leak coming in through the viewfinder area. garygsandhu Posted November 12, 2009 Share #7 Posted November 12, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Yes, the door on my MP, M6 and my old M7 had a slight give. My M3 does not.
atlfoto Posted November 12, 2009 Author Share #8 Posted November 12, 2009 Thank you all, you have opened my eyes... I was paranoic with the lightleak but as James said, the problem should be in the shutter. The vertical stripes of the negatives are only in the exposured surface, so you can perfectly see the film brand name and the ISO (KODAK 400 T-X, etc...). If it were a lightleak it will be imposible to see those letters... On the other hand, the stripes are white in the negative (black in the positive), so it corresponds to an underexposure of this area... This afternoon I will shoot a roll with diferent shutter speeds and will develope it. I will post the scans with the results... Unfortunately, I think a shutter problem will be much serious (read "expensive") to solve than a lightleak. Again, thank you very much good people!! atlfoto Posted November 12, 2009 Author Share #9 Posted November 12, 2009 In fact, the problem has raised in cold temperatures (I was shooting snow landscapes in the mountains) and I have found this thread in other forum from ten years ago RE: [Leica] M6 question "I have also had other shutter problems with this M6 a few years ago, getting a band across images from "shutter bounce" - mainly due to the effect of cold on the shutter mechanism lubricant." earleygallery Posted November 12, 2009 Share #10 Posted November 12, 2009 It sounds like the camera is in need of a CLA, not expensive if you use a local camera repair man rather than sending it to Leica. Basic CLA's run at about £100/£150 or equivalent.
