The ricoh rival

Barjohn, to be honest, I only started not liking the Panasonic output after seeing some of these images that I thought were Panasonic for some reason... I had no preconceived notions other than that. I used a Leica D-LUX 4 and thought the images were great for a P&S...and that's Panasonic. I'm not big on certain Nikon lenses either... prior to using a Leica M6 and a 35mm summicron, I was using a F4 and a 8008 with various lenses. I thought they were great until I tried the Leica stuff. Leica lenses were the first lenses I could tell there was a difference in what I was seeing vs. other lenses. That said, the X1 doesn't seem to be special nor does the Ricoh. However, they sure do seem to be more than acceptable to my eyes.

Hi John I do not know how to explain it fully, but when I look at the photograph it appears blurred or has a certain haze to the photograph and to me the 100% cropped one shows that. maybe it is something to do with the sensor. I know where you are coming from when it comes to digital cameras, you could tell the difference between some film cameras with regard to image quality. Just look at the photographs in the daily papers I think the image quality over the last few years has declined they lack a certain sharpness.

That is what I'm seeing as well in some of the photos... but I don't see it in the X1 or Ricoh photos for the most part.

This is the Leica User Forum. We don't care about cost here. ;)

then i can heartily recommend picking up the Ricoh GXR/A12. it has everything the Leica X1 should have had, with the possibility more modules in the future. it is truly a stunning camera!

and you say that from experience?

What does that have to do with experience? I just happen to have an opinion which is different from yours. I hope that's OK with you. (BTW, are you talking about your own experience with the Ricoh? Did you have it in your hand already?)

As I already said, I won't buy the X1. Still, it has some features that I like very much and that no other camera, certainly not the Ricoh, has. One thing that for example is very important for me is that the X1 has "traditional" controls for aperture and shutter speed. That's something you rarely see in digital cameras (except for a few that also happen to carry the name Leica). For me, a camera that "has everything the Leica X1 should have had" better had these controls. The Ricoh hasn't.

i do, as a matter of fact.

and the Ricoh has all that and more! don't knock it until you've tried it... including all important focusing with the EVF controlled though the lens... traditional? no! but it works the way i think that a Leica should if you don't have a rangefinder window. i am not an f/8 and be there (especially with a 50mm) -- and i prefer to focus (or at least tweak it) myself with the lens. the GXR allows this, including quick scale via the lens (which you see on either screen or EVF (which is quite excellent). Aperture and Shutter speed also easily controlled.

will i buy it? likely not, unfortunately as it is a lovely camera. unfortunately, the silent shutter, live view, macro capabilities, etc. are not enough for me to justify when i have an M8 with excellent 50mm equivalent lenses-- if not, i'd get it in a heartbeat.

i don't need it and still i am tempted... it was very much the rangefinder experience.

I'd say there is more than a good chance the ricoh is a better package and this will be backed by the results, though it will never be seen this way on this forum. Why should it be it's a leica forum and has never been impartial.

true...

i am saying this on behalf of people who may be actually looking at alternatives to the red dot and love the 50mm FOV. there are a few here, lurking you know.

i am writing up a rough review/basic impressions (that i will obviously post elsewhere)...

my impressions that it is what the X1 should have been are not only my own. i can't mention names, though, as i don't want them to get in trouble... it is an amazing camera and by no means a point and shoot. this is one you actually have to learn,

Probably more than a few...........................seeing I am after a camera to back up the Epson and ricoh when traveling I have a feeling I will migrate towards the ricoh all be it against my initial intent. Mainly because of focus and the 2 point something raw...... hopefully the ricoh has better raw speed

Cam, I hope you post it on a forum that I can respond on: you know what I mean.

the review will be up on Wouter's blog, with pointers in various forums.

it will not be technical -- i.e., no timing of write times, etc. (all i know is i never had to wait for the camera in that regard, Imants) -- more my impressions from using it. i am shooting on a pre-production unit, with firmware still in flux (they are listening to our feedback already), so i do not want to spread disinformation by getting anal...

i am off to shoot some more this morning, which part of me doesn't want to -- the more i shoot with it, the more i want it. it is a little bit addictive :D

Would you mind sharing when the review will be up? Popflash has just significantly lowered the pre-order price, it starts to look tempting.

i promise to post the link as soon as it is up. it will probably not be until monday night or tuesday now (when i have to give the camera back)...

we talked them into loaning it to us for a little longer and, to be truthful, i want more time with it... amusingly, i keep on compensating for my M8 and 35 Lux -- thinking i will get more in the shot, rather than what i actually see. i honestly hadn't realised how hard-wired i've become :p

keep in mind when viewing an photo from it right now, it is likely to be JPEG out of the camera. a proper RAW profile needs to be written and we have already passed that on to Ricoh (who are working furiously on it). so now i am taking pics in RAW w/colour JPEGs, rather than the b/w tweaked i had been using.

i truly am loving it more and more with each use.

While I realize that you have a preproduction camera, can you give us impression of AF speed, preview speed (how fast a preview image is available), how quickly the preview can be zoomed, the quality of the EVF, especially in low light (does it get noisy or stay clean enough for MF) and of course IQ.
