wattsy Posted November 28, 2006 Share #1 Â Posted November 28, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am probably missing something but I cannot find an easy way of converting my DNG files into black and white using Capture One LE. Obviously I can output a colour TIFF and do the conversion in Photoshop but if I'm toying between keeping an image in colour or converting to b&w I like to be able to make this decision within the RAW conversion software. The only way I have found to output in b&w is to change the profile associated with the camera to one of the Phase special effect profiles but this has to be done in preferences and is hardly convenient. I know that Adobe Lightroom seems more capable (and user friendly) in this regard but I currently prefer the conversions I get from C1 LE to those I get from Lightroom. Does Capture One Pro make it easier to make choices regarding b&w v. colour?

Venkman Posted November 28, 2006 Share #2  Posted November 28, 2006 right hand side, where you can "add to stack" - slightly above that, there are several profiles to put out to in a pulldown menu - you can choose b/w there - works for me  If you need it more detailed, I'd have to look it up in a couple of hours.  Dirk
rosuna Posted November 28, 2006 Share #3 Â Posted November 28, 2006 Capture One Pro allows to set a profile per picture, and the profiles are easily selectable. Â Capture One LE does not allow this. I find the LE version useless, due to this limitation and many others. I cannot understand how Phase One charges 100 euros for this application, or 500 euros for the Pro version. Â In Capture One LE you can do B&W conversion by means of a complete desaturation and a contrast correction. Â All RAW converters have more features and a more efficient use of the hard disk space than Capture One. Try Raw Developer. Â Phase One has announced a version 4 of Capture One LE for the end of this year. I hope the new application is much improved.

I use LE and I can't seem to find this "add to stack" thing.  All I can see in LE is to desaturate with the exposure tool, and then play with contrast, curves, color balance, tint, color temperature... with the WB tool. wattsy Posted November 28, 2006 Author Share #5 Â Posted November 28, 2006 In Capture One LE you can do B&W conversion by means of a complete desaturation and a contrast correction. Â That's true but it seems a bit of a clunky way of doing things. Other RAW conversion software I have used (ACR, Canon DPP, Lightroom) usually offers the ability to quickly select (and then fine-tune) different b&w 'filter' options, toning options, etc. I'm surprised that C1 LE doesn't have a more obvious way of making b&w conversions. Â Isn't version 4 expected around the middle of next year? I also get the impression that the benefits of version 4 will be felt most by studio photographers who are processing large numbers of massive RAW files from the MF Phase backs. I don't mind buying the software if it's any good.
Venkman Posted November 28, 2006 Share #8  Posted November 28, 2006 Dirk, are you talking Capture One LE or PRO? I use LE and I can't seem to find this "add to stack" thing. All I can see in LE is to desaturate with the exposure tool, and then play with contrast, curves, color balance, tint, color temperature... with the WB tool.  Exactly - and the last tab you should have there (at least I have) is the one with a small white box that shows the file names when you click the "+" for stacking/processing them? Directly on top of that is a pulldown menu in which you can select "camera embeded profile", something like "to web" and two more profiles, one of them being b/w. It's the tab where you can chose the output format as well, like TIFF, JPEG fine etc.  Sorry for being so vague, but I'm at work and have used the software for only a week now - and in german - but I am sure it's the LE version, cause it's the one that came with the M8.  Edit: this feature does the following: it does not let you preview the picture in b/w, but will output it directly to a b/w TIFF or JPEG, which will then automatically opened in a viewer if you have ticked the accroding box. Is that something you were looking for or am I totally off?  Edit 2: found a screenshot. It's on the "Process" tab, "Color Management Workflow" - that's what i use to convert to b/w. On second thought, that's probably totally wrong, but it works for me.

scott kirkpatrick Posted November 28, 2006 Share #10 Â Posted November 28, 2006 There's a set of profiles from JFI that I use. They have a std profile and red, yellow, green, and orange filter versions, each in four strengths. About $16. I use them with C1 Pro. See JFI Color Labs . chrism Posted December 30, 2006 Share #12  Posted December 30, 2006 The JFI presets work well in Photoshop too. My favourite B&W conversion is to use the lightness channel in lab mode and then darken with a second layer. It's easy to make an action: Mode > Lab Color Channels > hide channels a and b Mode > grayscale (yes to discard color info) Layer > duplicate, name as Background Layer > set background layer to multiply Layer > adjust opacity to taste  And speaking as an, ahem!, new M8 owner as of this morning, I'm finding CS3 giving much more natural colours than Raw Developer or C1.  Chris

Can you tell me why this Pay by Credit Card form is on your site if you do not take credit cards, and where I sent my credit card information? That is worrying.  I have a paypal account, but I have very little money left on it. Once you spend $10,000 with them, they will not let you spend more unless you give them your bank account, which I (and many other people) will not do.  Thank you,  Bill Hollinger
