Leica 135mm f/2.8 Elmarit on M8.2

i just received mine, and had it adjusted (focus) and coded for the m8. i've never used a lens with goggles before, but find they make focusing and composing (90mm framelines) easier than expected. the lens is quite heavy, especially on a wrist strap, but not impossible. mine uses series 7 filters, so i already had the uv/ir filter for it.

good luck

I have the M8 and use this 135/2.8 Elmarit on it without problem. The only time you MAY have clearance problem with the goggles while mounting and dismounting this lens is if you had the grip or a half-case on the camera. I don't use either so I hope others who do fill in.

I have had one of these lenses for well over 10 years and find it useable on film or M8. I have the second version and have used it without the IR filter with mostly decent results. Before I reactivated the lens, I had it cleaned, the focus freed up, and the goggles adjusted. It's big, but it works fine and gives about a 180 mm equivalent.

As to the grip question - you can't mount the lens if you have a grip on the M8.

hi lars

my "luigi" has a pretty big grip - almost the same protrusion as the leica m8 grip/baseplate.

an alternative for a day at the football field etc might be to remove the luigi and use a monopod on the elmarit.

believe me, i wish i could try this and other lenses on an m9 too. have you ordered one?

greetings to all from hamburg

Thank you guys for the advise. Thank you for the samples Rick. How does this lense perform on low light? I do a lot of musicians pics in low light, must of the time with a Summilux 50/1.4, but sometimes also use a Elmarit 90/2.8. I wan to add the 135 just for those ocassions an extra reach is needed.

I just got a used 135 2.8 from B&H for a little under $300. It's in great condition, and I'm hoping to go shoot some tomorrow. Will post images. Oh, and to clarify, if you do have a Luigi half case, with the grip, you definitely have to remove the case to clear the goggles.

  • 2 months later...

I just picked up one of the 135mm lens with eyes version 2 that takes a 55 filter and have one of the cheaper Zauo cases off ebay for $ 68.00 US and it goes on without issue. I do have the grip from Lieca and actually prefer this to the case but the eyes do not clear. Wishing just does not clear it.

Have not shot much with this lens yet but look forward to it. Love the idea it has a tripod socket.

Never looked through a set of eyes like this before, almost erie and with the weight it will take some getting used too. I think the old idea of your lens length should be your minimum shutter speed will hold here. Hand holding under say 187.5, (half way between 1/125 and 1/250 almost matches the 180 mm size on the M8.2.

Hope to try some images this weekend. Oh the eBay price on the lens in really pristeene condition was $ 363 with shipping and the original Leica leather case for the lens, very odd "D" shaped case with velvet inside.
