scott kirkpatrick Posted November 27, 2006 Share #1 Posted November 27, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) to leica mgmt: Is the 30% offer for early buyers in effect, and up to what date? The draft letter to dealers said any purchaser by Dec 31 was entitled to this. Where can its terms and conditions be seen? Are the dates for some of the promotions going to be extended because of the delays in shipments. I'm thinking particularly of the offer to code 2 existing lenses if you buy one new lens (in US and Canada). That was set to expire on Dec 31 as well. Will we receive an engineering explanation of the problems and their resolution, and of the tradeoffs that Leica has faced in designing the M8, free of spin and marketeer-speak? Or is this just too sensitive a subject right now? What was in the rest of the 25 pages? Others? scott

leicaleica Posted November 27, 2006 Share #2 Posted November 27, 2006 I was told by a Leica rep in Munich last week that the streaking issue will require a modification of the circuit board; would like to know more details about that. Would like to know whether the IR cut filters (Sperrfilter) to be commissioned by Leica are exactly the same in regard to cutting off wave lengths as the currently available ones, such as B+W 486 type. Sean is to be commended for his tremendously valuable role.

leicaleica Posted November 27, 2006 Share #4 Posted November 27, 2006 Well, the point would be to gather all the questions everyone can think of and present them in a comprehensive manner, rather than everyone submitting individual smaller issues and not getting a comprehensive, official response and solutions. terrycioni Posted November 27, 2006 Share #5 Posted November 27, 2006 Scott, Good to say hello to a fellow GR-D owner. Did you purchase an M8? Cool! I was at the Leo's Camera demo day in Vancouver on Nov. 9th and they had a chrome body unspoken for - so I bought it. I had a stable of lenses for my M7 so I was in good shape lens wise. I am curious what you think of the camera to this point - outside of all the IR and banding discussion... Cheers

Cheers Hi Terry, I'm embarassed to say that I ordered my M8 from Popflash, joined the forum and have graduated all the way to Ehrfahrener Benutzer without reaching the head of the M8 queue. Maybe in the next few weeks, as I'll take silver, magenta or whatever comes in. I don't want to ask about the state of the queue until the boxes are shipping. I also have to coordinate with my courier service (colleagues or myself on business trips to the US). In the meantime I am shooting film in an M2 (which turns out to need some serious CLA) and working the GR-D pretty hard. My E-1 sits until I need long lenses or bounce flash. There's some new GR-D files on PBase. regards, scott

Could you post for us how you scan your film. I'm restarting with the M7 shortly. Your wait for the M8 will be well rewarded. I hope they will send you the updated model. I'd hate you to have to then ship it to germany and wait all over again. Asher

BTW, for those who wonder why *I* ask Leica questions... I request information from Leica as a journalist who has a particular interest in rangefinder cameras including the R-D1 and M8. A couple weeks ago, I posted one of their official statements (which was created in response to questions from myself and other reviewers) at the request of the moderators here. I realize that not everyone on the forum reads RR so it does seem to be useful to publish some of the official responses I get from Leica here as well. Best way should be to contact Leica or your dealer directly via e-mail. Don't forget that sales promotions are often limited to certain regions/countries so tell them where you come from and where you want to buy.
scott kirkpatrick Posted November 28, 2006 Author Share #12 Posted November 28, 2006 Sorry, did I get your question right? I wouldn't rely on 25 pagers you get via Internet. It's 25 pages that we didn't get by Internet, but which was sent around within the Leica distribution chain. Parts of the first few pages were summarized and posted on this forum. These have proved to be correct. But what was in the other 23 pages? Deals still to come? A more open discussion of the problems and the plans to solve them than has been made public to date? I am sure that there is more to know, and it might help us customers to make more sensible plans. scott
ho_co Posted November 28, 2006 Share #13 Posted November 28, 2006 Herr Reid, I'm still curious about the idea of 8-bit DNG files. How funny that that question seemed so important a month ago, and now has taken a back seat to "May I still buy a lens at 30% discount"! --HC
sean_reid Posted November 28, 2006 Share #14 Posted November 28, 2006 Herr Reid, I'm still curious about the idea of 8-bit DNG files. How funny that that question seemed so important a month ago, and now has taken a back seat to "May I still buy a lens at 30% discount"! --HC Hi Howard, It did move to the back burner, it seems. Leica has promised me some information about that but at the moment I think their attention is, understandably, on other aspects. My own emphasis right now is on the issues of lenses, filters, color, profiles, "closed vs. open system", etc. I think that the streaking, etc. will be dealt with in the repair. The IR sensitivity, however, is still an important issue because, indirectly and among other things, it can affect which lenses will work well on the M8. I'm most of the way done with a very large article on the 28 lenses that looks at all of this stuff. I'm also awaiting information from Leica in response to various questions. Many irons in the fire and still the usual work for clients to deal with. Cheers, Sean
