Personally I think the current system for choosing venues is the fairest compromise. I've been to all challenges so far and there is the core of regulars who make the effort to attend, as well as new faces each year, which is great.

Given that the people who turn up are most likely to go the following year it seems fair that they should have first say in where to go next. OK its a worldwide forum but if Tokyo, for example, was voted the venue by other members then I doubt we'd get many turning up. Our American friends have held their own challenges in past years (not this year I've just realised?) and if anyone further afield wanted to do the same they can.

If one feels strongly about choosing a particular city then turn up next year and lobby for it! I suggested Krakow the other year and to my surprise the majority went with it!

Like Brian I'm surprised Wetzlar hasn't been more popular, especially with the German members, as we have a very good turn out for Berlin.

On balance I feel that the current system is the most reasonable. Those (I was about to say going to the bother of, but thought better of it ) attending get to select the short list and then the rest of the forum can vote.

I too noticed that the US did not host a Challenge this year - why on earth not, you guys?

It is a shame that more EU members fail to make the effort, but it is always good to see our "regulars". Maybe we need to do some promoting in advance of 2010? WE are after all an approachable and sociable bunch! (Hic!) :D

Berlin and Krakow were great and Malta was super (I missed the others), and I am sure that the 2010 venue, Venice most probably, will be likewise. Max, where are you? - Carl may need your assistance!

Theres a risk that some members of the forum might become disinterested if we make it too inward looking.

The Challenge is great fun as is but it needs (I suppose) to retain accessibility to as many members of the forrm as possible to be valid and have universal interest.

I guess there's always a risk of the Challenge going to somewhere we can't get to but for every one person who couldn't get to (for example) Hong Kong (me included !!), there'd be another who would think his or her chance had come.

At the moment, we're in the lucky position of being out front with others on the sidelines encouraging, voting, and looking at our photographs but if the Challenge went somewhere else, it would only change the personnel, not the principle and it would be us encouraging and voting someone else, not the other way round.

That being the point - it's not that EU or US guys fail to make the effort but that there's a risk of them being passively excluded by a smaller group of people well meaningly following their own interests, albeit unintentionally.

How many people were there in Malta? I wish I could have made it, but I hope to be there next year.

There's probably no 'perfect' way of choosing the next location, but I do think that the current method of giving a say to those who made it to the previous year's event is a good one.

Rolo, I think I've suggested Blackpool before, I'm not holding my breath for it to be chosen any time soon.

Robert, I hear what you're saying but I disagree.

The idea kicked off with a meeting in London and its continued and grown which is great, but the people who contribute are mostly living within Europe (I must mention Erl's attendance in Krakow as an exception!).

It's a chance for a weekend break, which needn't be too expensive if using budget airlines etc., but if next years challenge venue was Rio or Tokyo, how many would really make the effort to attend? I doubt I could afford the time or the money for such a trip much as I'd love to.

But, and this is my point, there's no reason whatsoever why other members around the world shouldn't organise 'local' challenges. The American challenge worked well in previous years from what I saw.

I do think the world is too big for one one challenge!

I'm not actually unhappy with arrangements either - the key point is that the options are debated, otherwise there's a risk that the Challenge will become 'What the London Leica Users forum and Friends did next' rather than the international competition that it could become, which would be a shame.

That's today's contribution from the Burnahm on Sea jury..

Rattles skeleton (ouch!!), stirs cauldron, speeds off on broomstick....

IIRC, there were 25 of us in Malta. That's as good as we got in Berlin, so it has to be judged a great success.

17 members registered for the shoot and all have submitted their shots. In addition some of us brought our non-shooting wives along (there were at least four of them). I'm very happy with this year's Challenge and am looking forward to organizing next year's already.

The submissions are up in the Malta One Challenge forum, but Andreas has to open it up for general member access before you can have a look and cast your votes.

Can anyone point me at the rules for the One Challenge? I could be interested in going next year, but before I vote I would like to know what is involved. I've tried searching for them on the forum, but have drawn a blank to date - I am sure that they are there somewhere!

Regards

Mike

Here you go http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/forum-member-meetings/99883-malta-challenge-17-october-2009-terms.html

There's no topic or theme as such, just the constraints on equipment/material and time. It's really all about having a fun time somewhere interesting with fellow Leica users!

The rules are very straightforward and simple. As James says, it is the constraints that make it challenging. Believe me, it is challenging! Well worth it tho'.

Oh, and you don't need "advanced" or expensive gear - one competitor this year was using a C-Lux2.

Yes, I can see that the limitations do put a premium on skill, although chance will inevitably play a part on the day. The quality available from any recent digital P & S is little short of amazing, in my opinion. Even to the extent that some professionals are using them on assignment without obvious detriment to the eventual image.
