wlaidlaw Posted October 28, 2009 Share #1 Posted October 28, 2009 Advertisement (gone after registration) Having been told that the M9 arriving for me on Friday will be anthracite grey, I want to order leather for it from CameraLeather.com Custom camera leather and leatherette . I think that courage may have deserted me and having thought about Slate Blue Kidskin, I suspect I will go for Rollei Black Beauty again, like on my M8. Has anyone recovered an M9 yet, and if so, can they confirm that the M8 kit fits? Wilson

loksi Posted October 29, 2009 Share #2 Posted October 29, 2009 I was thinking of changing to a 'black' dot
Shootist Posted October 29, 2009 Share #3 Posted October 29, 2009 There is no difference between the M8 and M9 body. They are identical so all the M8 covers will fit on the M9.
marknorton Posted October 29, 2009 Share #4 Posted October 29, 2009 Wilson, my chrome M8 was covered in slate blue before it went for upgrade and came back with the standard covering. The slate blue is much darker than in the image on the Camera Leather site, it's as close to black as makes no difference unless you compare the two side by side. It all depends on how the current batch has turned out. No question though that the kid leather is much nicer than the original M8 cover.

ChrisC Posted October 29, 2009 Share #6 Posted October 29, 2009 Wilson - If you scroll down about 2/3 of this page you will see an illustration of an M8 covered with Verdigris Kid Skin : http://www.cameraleather.com/leica_m/recovering/ Unfortunately for Cameraleather potential customers, the 'presence' of Verdigris [if my camera covering is anything to go by] bears no relation to that illustration; it is actually far, far more handsome than that in real light. As others have discovered [perhaps Mark Norton?], when Verdigris is photographed with flash lighting it's greenness lights up. In fact it is a sober, subtle, darker green that is very beautiful; If I had an M9 I would order Verdigris for it regardless of the M9 finish. If it's any help, a photographer friend who knows my camera was surprised when he realised it's covering was no longer M8 black; the colour melts into the camera and has never looked like any of the Verdigris illustrations I have seen. ................. wlaidlaw Posted October 29, 2009 Author Share #8 Posted October 29, 2009 I hope you are pleased with your M9 now it seems to be on the horizon. I thought you were undecided at the last count whether you prefered that or the black one? George, I really don't know what is going to turn up tomorrow. I have to wait until Saturday to collect anyway, as Chiron is not there tomorrow. Chiron says that they have had a delivery note for a black one and Richard Swan says a grey one is coming. It would work out even for me on cost as if it is grey, I don't need a new handle and that will more than pay for the re-covering costs. I was quite looking forward to a black one, as my only black Leica so far is pre-war (a IIA). I have said I am just not fussy on colour, as other than the rubber covering on the grey, I like both. I suspect that you need to be careful with both colours until the lacquer hardens, which will probably take a month or so until the phthalate plasticisers evaporate. I am guessing by the ease which they have been scratched, they don't use two pack cyano-acrylate lacquer, which is very hard. I am going to go with Rollei Black Beauty embossed leather if I get a grey one, as it looks so good and it has quite a bit of resilience, so is nice to hold. I will put my usual 3M rubber 20x20x12 mm Bumpon on the back as a thumb rest and for one handed use. Wilson
george_b Posted October 29, 2009 Share #9 Posted October 29, 2009 Hi Wilson. Good luck with whatever arrives. I'll give Chiron a ring next week and enquire where mine may be in the pipeline, forlorn question but I'll have to ask.

For all the cost, I am wondering whether to put on my brave hat and order a colour leather as well as black. Indian Red looks nice as well as slate blue, verdigris and deep jade (not sure about composite leather though). Then if I don't like the coloured I can then go on to black beauty with minimal delay. Wilson honestly? i would... what do you have to lose? as for Indian Red, i was mighty tempted on my Epson but chickened out. somebody said it was very much a brick red, not garish at all, if that helps any. not sure how it would look on the grey, though. george_b Posted October 29, 2009 Share #15 Posted October 29, 2009 My Porsche is metallic burgundy ;-]] Wilson Now this seems like the ultimate in colour co-ordination, now what colour blends in with Sussex mud & grim cacked on my car for when I get mine? Seriously, how easy is it to recover the leather for ordinary mortals whose idea of DIY is changing a lightbulb. Are the costs shown on the web site? Seriously, how easy is it to recover the leather for ordinary mortals whose idea of DIY is changing a lightbulb. Are the costs shown on the web site? George, My abilities with leather may be on a par with yours. Kelvin at Protech now at Coopers Green, Uckfield (near Sian Saddlery at Vulcan Farm) will do it for you beautifully for about £30. Money well spent in my view. If a grey M9 arrives rather than a black one, I will certainly get him to do it like he did my M8. Wilson
ChrisC Posted October 30, 2009 Share #17 Posted October 30, 2009 Wilson - Re-covering isn't a £30 job. Chris Chris, Firstly having just got my grey M9 today, I am less displeased with the covering than I expected. It looks different from what I recall my original M8 covering looking like and actually looks very like old fashioned crackle black paint. If I do go for a Cameraleather covering, I would definitely get Kelvin my photo repair man to do it. I am good with computer electronics and old racing car mechanical innards but I only have to show a piece of wood a nail and it splits. Similarly with sticky backed leather. I would end up with a nude M9 and leather covered hands. I know my limitations. Wilson
