C1 Pro 5 - Just a test - Interesting…

It's a bit steep though.

Nik Software are asking €100 for an upgrade from v1 to v2 of Viveza.

Given that Viveza is a (very good) one trick pony, I think that is just taking the piss, even if they have added a load more tools that I already have £500 of Photoshop to deal with...

I agree but I have always thought that Nik software is very expensive. Many serious photographers can afford this stuff but we still baulk at what we see as a bit of a rip-off.

I'm seeing a lot of prints made using Silver Efex Pro and the look is becoming boring.

I'll continue to hone my PS skills instead.

With regard to Capture 1 I dont think you can pay for an upgrade to the non-pro ver 5 using your LE key. It was not 'free' as Phaseone are saying we paid for it as part of our M8 purchase. We were not party to the agreement between Leica and Phaseone. I've always assumed that the Leica-Phaseone agreement was a commercial one and included a payment by Leica to Phaseone.

It still does not seem a good move from Phaseone to take it out on Leica users.

We never new that it was a dead-end! after ver4.

So what will they achieve? I suspect it will be an overall loss of income and market share for Phaseone.

Wilson,

Given the specifc key that you own, this is not something that we are inclined to entertain. I completely understand your position on the matter but I would humbly ask that you try to understand ours.

The Key that you own was given to you for free, at least on our behalf. The key is a Leica Key and as such we generously provided these to Leica as per an agreement, the agreement being that the preliminary and secondary software would be free to those users that Leica saw fit but any subsiquent upgrades would not be free. If we were to provide you a free upgrade or discounted upgrade at this point we would be losing even further sales than what has already been lost as per this agreement. If you really want to fight for this discount I think that Leica is the one that should provide it for you as we (Phase One) has already welcomed you into our product line at no charge for more than 2 years.

I have no desire to see another talented photographer go to Lightroom over our software. Nor do I wish to see you do so over something trivial such as the cost of software, which in the grand scheme of things is insignificant when compared to the quality results of your images. However, given all the factors, if you wish to move onto lightroom I fear there is nothing I can offer you to prevent it. I apologies for this and wish you luck in your future photographic endeavors.

Kind Regards,

Phase One Support

'Another' - an interesting word, it seems that there might be quite a few of them migrating to Lightroom. Phaseone have dug themselves a hole.

I think Howard put his finger on it when he said there may now be "bad blood" between Leica and Phase One, not least because of the threat of the S2, which is bound to have some impact on Phase One (and Leaf/Sinar, if they continue) camera sales. Cutting off your nose to spite your face is never a good decision in the long term although it may feel good at the time to say "well that's telling them!" I was trying and obviously failing, to get over to Phase One that it was a good business decision not a concession, to offer Leica C1 users an attractive upgrade path to Pro. Fell on deaf ears.

A peculiar calculation from them, if only regarding this forum,

which has seen its traffic dramatically increase thanks to

remarkable efforts from Andreas and new visibility/products

from Leica.

There are quite a few photog here who work with C1 and hail

this program, with reason, Jamie Roberts being the most prominent,

and quite a few who really discovered C1 quality thanks to some threads

here (I, for one).

I would have thought C1 had given more consideration to the

pool of pro/smi-pros/ amateurs it could tap in here.

Wilson I read that you were intending to pay the full price for ver5 pro. If you have not already thought of it, probably a good idea to ascertain exactly what future upgrades will be available, free and paid for.

Jeff,

I have bought earlier today, the full version of V5 pro, at €299. However I suspect that I will be in a minority of current Leica C1 users who do so. It will be Phase One's loss if I am right.

Wilson, if my experience is anything to go by, you will soon forget your euros and reap the benefit of the great features of C1 5 Pro. Their help manual is not particularly helpful, significant 'blanks' in useage etc. but with persistence you will forget that too and enjoy the real power and quality of the actual software.

Not everyone enjoys the learning curve, but it is rewarding. Move forward and soak up the benefits.

I am just using C1 V5 pro for the first time tonight on M9 uncompressed DNG's converted to 16 bit TIFF's. The files are enormous at 207 MB each. I was expecting 109 MB. Anyone else experienced this?

Wilson, is there some kind of up-sampling going on? What are the pixel dimensions of the Tiff? I've just opened an M9 file in CS4 and it's the size you expected.

Steve,

It was my fault. I had created a new process recipe but I had not un-ticked the default one, which arrives on the installed program as "untitled". When I looked at the output folder, I had created two near identical TIFF"S but at the process stage read out in C1, it shows them added together. Therefore 2 x 108.5 MB files were shown as 207 MB. There is a lot to learn, upgrading from 4.8.3 amateur to 5 Pro.

When I have a few minutes in a very busy next week, I will find all the links to the Youtube tutorial videos made by Phase one and watch them in Youtube. On Phase One's website, you cannot watch them in full screen, which you really need to do, to see what the instructor is clicking with his mouse cursor.

I suspect more CS3 Auto levels (applied to both) to be the culprit.

Just why do you have Auto Level turn on in PS in the first place?

You can, or could, output to JPG right from C1 then open in PS, with the auto levels turned off, and resize for posting.

I would of never used C1 if it hadn't come with the camera and I suspect most other buyer of the M8 are like me. So that loss in sales is just rubbish.

If they offered V5 at a upgrade price, to the LE & Pro versions of V5 for Leica users, I suspect they would have more sales of one kind or another. As it is now it is good bye to PO.

What a load of K-Rap. Offer a upgrade at a decent price.

Phase One you do know your software is overpriced to begin with, don't you? If not then let me be the first one to say it.

Is anyone else finding V5 Pro very unstable running on a Mac. I am trying to run it on a 2009 13" MacBook Pro 2.53 gHz, with 4GB of RAM, so certainly man enough for the job. At the load from card stage I keep getting the SBOD (spinning beachball of death). When you go to Force Quit, the program is shown as "not responding". I have done the usual Mac things, deleting the session libraries, repairing file permissions, removing any plist caches, with no improvement. I will get onto Phase One but wondered if anyone else was seeing this. We had this immediately after the upgrade from V3.7.7. to V4 as well.

Wilson,

Same here.

I have now de-authorised and removed absolutely everything relating to C1 from my system. After reinstalling, it all seems to be working for time being.

This behavior was already there with 4.8.3.

And I did all this already following advice (from Rob I guess).

No avail.

Hello everybody,

I found an uninstaller on the Phase One forum website:

Rick Allen, rapdigital.net, digital tech, digital assistant, advertising, architecture, stills

It deletes four items as recommended by phaseone before updating the app.

These are
:

~/Library/Preferences/com.phaseone.captureone.plist ,

~/Pictures/Capture One Library/Capture One.col45 and col.50,

~/Library/Application Support/Capture One , and

Applications/Capture One.app.

It worked very well, and my C1 v5 is working very fast!

Succes,

Frans

I tried it.

Now it opens C1 and gives me the choice for C1 or C1 Pro Trial

(23 days remaining as I already used it since a week).

After launching, it says : to execute C1 Pro, app should be

relaunched.

I do. It quits. :D

Do it again. Quits again. :D
